Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

Pours clear golden with very thin off-white head. Some lacing that disappears almost totally. Hoppy Aroma has lemon, grape fruit and some dry woody/piney tones. Malts are sweetish caramelly. Balancing, dryish bitter finish. Medium bodied, slightly sticky and light carbonated.

OK IPA, but could have a little more kick. copper-golden clear color, with a small white head. Nice and tasty, mildly bitter hops.

Bottled sample. Vibrant orange in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas of toffee, pear, orange, and grapefruit. Fairly balanced malt+hop flavor combo, along with some booze, earthy hops, more orange and pear esters. A hint of diacetyl, and a slightly slick mouthfeel goes along well with a surprisingly grippy bitterness. Would be a bit better with a bit more hop aroma and a bit less booze. Not bad.

Pours a slightly hazy dark amber colour with a hearty cream head. Nice and hoppy aroma. Similar flavour with some apple notes and some sweetness. Warm bitter finish thats slightly dry. I like it.

500 ml clear bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.7%. Deep golden colour, moderate white head that does not last very long. Moderate but nice hoppy (Cascade and Goldings) aroma, hints of toffee too. Fizzy mouthfeel. The flavour has noticeable Goldings and Fuggles hops and some caramel, moderately bitter finish. Okay, but not particularly interesting.

Not a good beer at all this one, taste reminded me of Hobgoblin in many ways. Marstons tends to be cheaper than other beers and im beggining to see why now. Disappointed.
