Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

50 cL clear bottle. Pours clear and golden orange with a dense and slight off-white head. Dry malt aroma with a whiff of hops. Flavour is medium dry malt with a light hops spice note and bitterness. Light fruity note lurking through. Ends with a decent bitterness and light spice note.

The aroma is very light with notes of esters and yeast. The color is orange closing in on amber and it has a small bubbly very fast disappearing head. The flavor is nicely sweet malty with notes of oranges, other fruits, and hops. It ends on a nice dry bitterness.

UPDATED: JUL 3, 2005 (Bottle 50 cl) Beautiful, deep amber with a small, dense off-white head. Pronounced aromatic hoppiness well balanced with a light caramel-like malt-sweetness. I don’t agree that this isn’t an IPA (as the brewery also calls it). 270105

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2006 Bottled. Golden colour, mediumsized white head. Hoppy nose with fruity hints. Strong hopped flavour with some sweetishbitter fruity hints. Wellbalanced, and hops grows in the long aftertaste. Mouthdrying. Aroma reminds of a bitter, while flavour is very IPAish. 5 2 7 3 10

Bottled. Brownish amber, average head. Fruity nose. Sweetish with some drying grassy hops. Some sulphur and minerals. Soapy and light-medium bodied. Bready malt lies in the background of minerals and resin. A bittersweet sensation linger in the finish.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Doesn’t really come accross as an IPA - more malty than anything. Unremarkable but drinkable.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2009 Bottled. Clear, golden with a medium off-white head. Malt, caramel and hops in the aroma, quite low on hops, though. Sweet flavor with malt, caramel and hops. Medium body and a sweet, yet bitter and lasting, hoppy finish. Quite pleasant beer, but it is quite bold to label it as an IPA. It is a bit on the sweet side too, I think. Rating: 6-3-6-3-13-3-1. 060809

Bottle. A clear, golden beer topped by a small off-white head. Bready, caramel aroma with a nice hoppy footprint. A bit low on hops to be an IPA as the brewery says it is. Dry, full-bodied and quenching, with caramel maltyness, a bready touch and some citrusy, resiny bitterness. Slightly cheesy, but just a faint note. Dry, bitter finish with malty flavors blending in. A quenching and easy drinkable beer, but I guess two bottles would be more than enough. 091104
