Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Date tasted: July 7, 2013... Glassware: Wychwood Hopbgoblin tumbler... Occasion: celebrating a lazy Sunday’s end....Appearance: nice pale copper body that is clear and softly bubbling; cloudy white head that laces and quickly dissipates... Aroma: bready malts assert dominance--such an English treat--with some buttery notes... Palate: medium-bodied, smooth and buttery; some heat on the exhale,, despite the modest ABV.. Taste: extremely soft hints of toffee and hops; powerful display of malt high on the tongue; formidable... Overall: a curiosity purchase, using a gift card for a slew of brews including this one; I know Marston is renown for its bitter, and thought the IPA would carry the flag; malty , yes, and a quality sipper with a slightly smoked, buttery, definitively scotch finish....still, tough to place among the more formidable IPAs from either side of the pond....

Perfectly drinkable but very mainstream. No distinctive hoppy, citrusy or fruity taste. Fine but middle of the road

Bottle. This is a tidy little ESB with a nice hppy edge to it. One of the better Marstons offerings.

See: Dark gold, copper. 1 finger white head which dissipates quickly. Smell: Grassy, floral hop notes with an underlying bright fruity sweetness. Taste: Well balanced. Aroma is definitely sharper than the taste. Definite malt sweetness at first before the sharp tang of the hops come through. Sharpness is citrusy. Pallet: Light bodied, slightly oily mouthfeel. Low carbonation. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Pleasant IPA style, sharp bitterness is underlined by a recurring sweetness in each mouthful. Would probably only have one or two in a session.

Dec. ’13. A 0.5 l bottle at Dva Tona Bar, Split. Poured hazy golden body with quite small head. Weak but fine fruity aroma, tropical mostly, with some biscuit malt. Flavor was very lightly sweet, fine fruity, although a bit weird blend of mentioned fruit malt with kinda lemon juice. Some stale notes present as well, I guess from storing in clear bottles. Medium bodied with shorter biscuity finish. Different than others but definitely a fine bitter.

Gold; thin head of tight, tiny white bubbles; aroma is sulphur, leafy hops; taste is crisp, leafy, medicinal and very bitter; not what I expected and slightly disappointing.

This Burton IPA has a golden, light amber colour. The head is off-white but disappeared quickly to leave a ring around the glass. The aroma is fruity, and the taste has a fruity maltiness, dominated by apples. There is a refreshing bitterness from the hops. Very clean tasting with a nice, dry finish. An excellent, well-balanced IPA.

Not a typical IPA flavour, more malty than I’d prefer with a dodgy metallic aftertaste. Pleasant enough but nothing special.

500ml. This Old Empire IPA isn’t really an IPA. Dark amber colour. Tan head. Aroma of caramels, but no real hops. Taste hadn’t really got hops either. OK but not an IPA.
