(Bottle 50 cl) Pours a clear, dark, reddish brown with a light brown head. Aroma of sweetish, roasted malt and caramel. Fairly full and solid body with plenty of roasted malt and caramel notes. Not much bitterness to be detected. Not exactly refined but a fine winter warmer. 071006

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
500ml bottle from the local supermarket. Pours well and smells good - like treacle. Has a biscuity character and the tan coloured head lasts quite well. It’s very sweet and the aftertaste is mostly sugar and booze. Not a bad drop but not great either. A good thing to drink on the walk back from the railway station on a cold night after being out on the town.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. The colour of treacle with a thick brown head, which settles but lasts. A sweet toffee nose, and a warm malty flavour makes this a beer to sip slowly.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Wouldn’t have missed it much had I not tasted it (...if that makes sense!?!). Really just another filtered, dead and artificially charged strong ale in a bottle. Tasted after a session and a meal at the Green Man in rural Horsted Keynes, Sussex. Pours a sparkling ruddy-brown with a lot of huge bubbles unbefitting its style. Head was half decent, rocky and sandy beige in colour managing to hold out for the length and left behind some frosting on the glass. Rich, tannic, caramel and fruit pudding nose with the added bonus of charcoal. Palate differs showing toasted, lightly roasted, biscuity malts. Tasted around room temperature, it’s not exactly huge in body or presence and it’s a little lifeless on the tongue. Alcohol is prominent as is a light note of untreated pine. Quite sweet overall, toffeeish with a mildly dry, mildly astringent back end that’s desperately void of balance. Becomes cloying after a while, could have gone a bitter in between and come back to this. Pretty straightforward and bland. Average!!! (50cL, 31/01/07)

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(Bottle BB 31/01/07) Aroma of roasted malt and caramel with a hint of oak wood. Red brown colour, slightly sparkling and small, light brown, mostly diminishing head with very small lacing. Sweet caramel, roasted malty and slightly bitter (especially in the finish) flavour. Softly carbonated, dry, slightly sticky, warming (alcohol does not taste) and medium to full-bodied palate. Very good strong ale! 26/05/06
