Bottle from Humpers, Staple Hill. dark, ruddy brown with a short-lived, off-white head. Sweet, caramel, red berry fruit and candy sugar aroma. Flavour was a bit sugary, with a pasteurised edge some fruit fruit and warming alcohol finish. A bit industrial but still a good winter warmer.

A Mes rate: Sweet wine like aroma. Wonderful mahogany appearance with a reasonably well behaved head. Sweet sugary flavour that is not particularly balanced or refined. Alcohol is all too apparent. Strange full yet thin palate that ends up on the thin side. Sweet and cloying finish. Not too impressive.

500ml bottle from B&M home store. Pours clear dark mahogany brown, some red chinks shining through, thin, short-lived off-white head. Aromas of treacle, raisins, light metallic note. Some prunes too. Taste is liquorice, molasses, treacle. Faint herbal hops, that donít quite clean up the sticky finish, but they make an effort.

Beatiful dark ruby beer, lots of malt, fruitiness, quite sweet, and I would have preferred more bitterness to balance this. But itís not bad at all.

Fruity aroma, not so much in the taste. The ale has a tangy dry finish to it.

Bottle. Red brown colour with a big baige head. Sweet caramel, dark fruity aroma and a very sweet caramel, dark fruity taste. Medium body and a very sweet finish.

Bottle from one of the supermarkets. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin frothy tan head. The aroma is big roast and a hint of yeast with some burnt treacle. The flavour is medium bitter with a smooth liqourice, slightly alcoholic palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a long bitter finish. This was a lovely heart-warming beer and perhaps one of the best Iíve ever had from Marstons.

Clear dark ruby colour with low head and medium body. Nose of malt and smoked nuts. Taste of strong pure malt, torf, vanilla, woods, leaves, nuts, roast and licorice. Due to its high alcohol content and its heavy maltness it is not that easy to drink. Maybe itís not even THAT nice, but at least it is special.

Not a bad one but in the end it like a malt syrup with lots of sweetness, sugar and a decent end. Drinkable, warm but I would consider it a bit too thick.
