UPDATED: JUN 19, 2010 Almost stout-like deep ruby with a creamy, yellowed head. Smells a bit like Vimto; honey, blackcurrant and chocolate also there. Quite silky, audibly prickling with carbonation, head fizzes out in seconds. Flavour has licorice, caramel sweetness, chewy dark fruits, Kasteel Donker and a great big slug of booze. Slightly roasted finish. A beer that unfolds its secrets as it warms. Going to try and stand up now.

Bottle from Humpers, Staple Hill. dark, ruddy brown with a short-lived, off-white head. Sweet, caramel, red berry fruit and candy sugar aroma. Flavour was a bit sugary, with a pasteurised edge some fruit fruit and warming alcohol finish. A bit industrial but still a good winter warmer.

Bottle from one of the supermarkets. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin frothy tan head. The aroma is big roast and a hint of yeast with some burnt treacle. The flavour is medium bitter with a smooth liqourice, slightly alcoholic palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a long bitter finish. This was a lovely heart-warming beer and perhaps one of the best Iíve ever had from Marstons.

not sure if it was a bad bottle but it's not the sort of beer that should go off in a hurry. fat head, full fat, sweet flavours - burnt rockmelon, burnt peach. just didn't work for me, no nice hops to get rid of that cloying feeling

500 ml bottle @ home.
Pours a light brown colour with a small head. Aroma of caramel malts, honey and some fruits. Flavour of caramel malts, yeast, fruits and alcohol. Medium/full bodied with a warming alcohol finish. High carbonation. A bit above average.

A Mes rate: Sweet wine like aroma. Wonderful mahogany appearance with a reasonably well behaved head. Sweet sugary flavour that is not particularly balanced or refined. Alcohol is all too apparent. Strange full yet thin palate that ends up on the thin side. Sweet and cloying finish. Not too impressive.

Bottle from B&M Bargains; mahogany brown pour with velvety beige head, sweet stewed fruit aroma, quite sweet fruity taste, malts, a hint of grass, caramel, bitter finish, ABV present. Not bad.

Beatiful dark ruby beer, lots of malt, fruitiness, quite sweet, and I would have preferred more bitterness to balance this. But itís not bad at all.

Clear deep redbrown color, short off-white head. Aroma is malty, bit alcholic, sugar. Sweet malty taste. Bit sticky palate.

500ml bottle at home, a month past its BB date, 7.4%. Very dark reddy brown, sparkling, small tan head. Aroma is yeast, some apple and coins, wet paper. Body is rounded, soft carbonation, touch foamy. Taste is breathy dark malts, dates, treacle, tangy booze. Something quite íBelgianí about it - not sure if itís the yeast used... Decent, interesting to try, but probably not one Iíd reach for again.
