Traditional deliciousness from the midlands brewery you canít avoid down there. A high-ABV brew that still demands bit gulps, where you get plums, raisins, muck and general sweetness. Nice to see one of the big chains keeping summat so unique and worthy of being an end-of-week treat rather than a passable session ale. The only beer to date I have taken into a bath with me.

500ml bottle at home, a month past its BB date, 7.4%. Very dark reddy brown, sparkling, small tan head. Aroma is yeast, some apple and coins, wet paper. Body is rounded, soft carbonation, touch foamy. Taste is breathy dark malts, dates, treacle, tangy booze. Something quite íBelgianí about it - not sure if itís the yeast used... Decent, interesting to try, but probably not one Iíd reach for again.

Bottle from b&m, Team Valley, Gateshead. A very dark brown beer with ruby red highlights. It has a rich red fruit, malt and currant flavour followed by oak, vanilla and spiced berries on the sweet finish. Very nice.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep ruby brown colour with a thin beige head. Aroma of dark fruits like plum and raisin, also burnt sugar, treacle, caramel, berry sweetness and a little spice. Taste of plum pudding, raisin, treacle, liquorice, alcohol and chocolate. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation and a syrupy texture. A warming, bittersweet fruity finish. The best beer Iíve had from Marstonís. A pleasant, flavourful, warming winter beer, but I have had better, similar beers.

Bottle froma corner shop in Cambridge. Thin, translucent chocolate brown with big supermarket beer carbonation. Malt-led aroma, like chocolate Horlicks. The taste is sweet, syrupy and treacly, leading to a figgy/sugary sweet malty finish. Thin body. This is actually pretty good although there are far better ales to be had for this ABV.

Bottle from B&M Bargains, Stretford Mall [131114]
Dark caramel brown, light beige frothy head that dissipates
Aroma of rich fruity caramel malts, touch of alcohol
Taste of rich fruity caramel, soft toffee, little hops, mainly quite heavy sweet brown malts, touch of raisin, soft toffee malts, soft syrupy malts, alcohol a bit noticeable but ok, dab of some hedgerow fruits, the taste of rich malts is nice in this, simple for the abv
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, smooth texture. Sweet. Finish as main flavour, sweet malts, dab of warming alcohol
Overall - Just sweet fruity malts, same malts from aroma right to the finish. OK for under £2

Very subtle aroma. Dark brush and mildly fizzy. Thick caramel saying with a sticky throaty experience. Quite gorgeous. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Strong ale (or rather an old ale?) with sticky, light beige, creamy head and dark bronze colour with ruby hue, clear. Aroma of grassy and peppery hops, chocolate, lots of vanilla, candi syrup, caughing candy, pear, coffee liqueur. Soft fruitiness, malty caramel and chocolate, relatively light mouthfeel in relation to its strength, gentle hops in the finish with a bit of cloying sweetness. Very good and I would not be surprised if this improves significantly with ageing.
