Sweet caramel aroma. Ruby coloured with short lived tan head and a bit too much carbonation. Very thick. Sweetish malt & yeast flavour. Minor roasted bitterness. Slightly more flavour than Moretti La Rossa but twice as expensive.

Dark brown beer almost black with a stout style head. Very oatmeal aroma and a malty oatmeal flavour. A very complex beer, and a very good beer. A great example of an English ale.

Pours dark ruby colour with a small head. Aroma is sweet, rich and malty, slightly roasted. Notes of flowers, hops, raisins, dark fruits, toffee and plums. Well balanced ale. Alcohol is incredibly well hidden in the taste, but reveals itself creating a nice warm feeling and going straight to the head. I really liked this one.

Traditional deliciousness from the midlands brewery you can’t avoid down there. A high-ABV brew that still demands bit gulps, where you get plums, raisins, muck and general sweetness. Nice to see one of the big chains keeping summat so unique and worthy of being an end-of-week treat rather than a passable session ale. The only beer to date I have taken into a bath with me.

Flat looking medium brown hue with a thin island of creamy, tan foam. Chocolate and toffee arrive first in the aroma, which is somewhat mild overall. Honey on buttered, toasted bread follows with cherries and prunes. Peppery, floral hops and light minerals combine in semi-sharp note, well out-done by the sweet side of things. Slight tint of cola / liquorice. The flavour starts fairly sweet, a little cocoa and caramel; washes through dark fruits at mid-palate; and culminates in a woody, floral, off-dry finish. Slim aftertaste of dried cherries. Not quite full bodied, with an oily texture and soft, yet bristly, carbonation. With warmth, the dark fruits come to life and a bit of alcohol leaves the mouth with a dry, red wine sensation. An enjoyable and interesting sipper with no big minuses except for price.

UPDATED: MAY 7, 2012 Strong Red colour with a quick disappearing fizzy dark brown head. Smell of roast malt, caramel. Typical smell of a bitter. No alcohol on the nose considering the abv. Medium frothy oily body. Slightly grainy. Strong red fruit, cherries, berries, and plums taste. Sweet caramel malt, woody bittersweet finish. Some alcohol with some gut warming elements. Warming.

Bottle. Dark brown, some ruby red hues; almost purplish. Beige head fizzles away quickly. Nose is barley, booze, and berries; port as it warms. Taste is berries, alcohol, fresh water, port, and cough syrup. The hop finish is very light and overshadowed by a sweet syrup taste. Medium mouthfeel. Could benefit from a little more body.

Bottle. Lovely dark reddish brown colour, no head. Aroma of dark fruits. The taste is sweet malts, treacle and dark fruits. A slight alcohol warmth is minor and very little bitterness. Medium bodied. This is a sweet beer but I would not say sickly. Quite good.
