<Offlicence News - 4th March 2009> Marston’s is raising the abv of its Pedigree bottled ale to 5% and giving it a new red label. The Burton-Upon-Trent brewer has "changed the process, not the recipe" of its 50cl bottle in order to better reflect the taste and aroma of the cask ale version, according to brewing director Richard Westwood. The new red label design will also be rolled out to cans and cask hand pulls, but they will both remain at 4.5%abv. Westwood told OLN: "We didn’t want to produce a new beer. We used the same raw materials and tweaked the process to produce a beer that retains all of Pedigree’s characteristics. "It’s a better match to the cask version." The new bottles will start appearing on shelves over the next couple of weeks. Marston’s have pledged to absorb costs so there will be no price rises stemming from the launch and new look.

500ml bottle. Aroma is cress, malt, apple, hops. Appearance is pale, orange/brown-ish with a very thin head. Taste is light bitter, light sweet. Has a soft carbonation and leaves a light bitterness. Could be much more.

Bottle at home. Sweet golden syrup aroma, some still musty apples. Light amber colour, with a thin white head and a little lace. Watery thin palette. Sweet candy flavour chalky and a little salt.

Bottle 0,50L. Clear copper brown colour with small off white head. Strong fruity aroma, mostly grapes and a citrusy (orange) aroma. Light bitter taste turns into moderate bitter aftertaste. Light to medium body, watery texture.

First impression is that this is bland. Aroma is faint, but appearance is pretty good, amber color with decent foamy head. Taste is hops and light malt. Finish is dry and abrupt.

500ml Bottle, just out of date when poured into a UK pint sleeve on 5 Apr 2013. Looked OK, amber body with a fast disappearing head. The nose was malty with off/sour-fruit notes. The taste is semi-sweet, malty with fruits, not so sour as the aroma suggested. Caramel flavours give the beer its base taste, they overshaddow any other characters and the beer becomes just a caramel, malty brew. The beer is too one dimensional in my opinion. OK but not as good as the old rich, creamy Pedigree I remember from my youth.

Bottled. Poured medium orange with a short-ish lived off-white head. The aroma picked up sweet bready notes and honey with grassy hops and a little hay around.. pleasant enough. The flavor found tangy and bitter grass and herbal notes over bread, honey, and a little corn.. finished quick, crisp, and tangy. Lighter-bodied and a tad on the sharp side on the palate.. prickly carbonation.. drinkable and OK for the style, but I don’t need another.

June 2012 - Bottled as Pedigree Pale Ale. Inoffensive bitter, easy drinking, doesn’t taste of much.

500ml bottle in a glass. Pale golden/amber with an off-white head. Aroma of pale malts with a little caramel and toffee plus light hops. Flavor the same. Average texture. A standard beer.
