<Offlicence News - 4th March 2009> Marston’s is raising the abv of its Pedigree bottled ale to 5% and giving it a new red label. The Burton-Upon-Trent brewer has "changed the process, not the recipe" of its 50cl bottle in order to better reflect the taste and aroma of the cask ale version, according to brewing director Richard Westwood. The new red label design will also be rolled out to cans and cask hand pulls, but they will both remain at 4.5%abv. Westwood told OLN: "We didn’t want to produce a new beer. We used the same raw materials and tweaked the process to produce a beer that retains all of Pedigree’s characteristics. "It’s a better match to the cask version." The new bottles will start appearing on shelves over the next couple of weeks. Marston’s have pledged to absorb costs so there will be no price rises stemming from the launch and new look.

Bottle shared with MichaelBruch. Light amber in colour with steady but low head. Very bitter finish, like copper. Flavour of roasted malt and earthy tones.

50cl bottle, about 2.90€. "Crafted with English pale ale malt and Fuggles & Glding hops. Matured in Burton Union Oak casks".
Pours clear dark orange\amber with a small offwhite head, good lacing. Fresh on the nose, however nothing stands out. Aroma of mild caramel malts and soft english hops, possibly a faint woody note. Taste is sweetish on the malts, then a nice bitterness comes out. Finish is not exciting but sustained on the hops. Texture is watery and carbonation is high for the style. I’d say this is a counterpart to a good German Pilsener

Versa arancio scuro, aroma di malto con note di caramello. Il sapore è particolarmente dolce, anche qui note di caramello e crosta di pane. finale con un amaro equilibrato, ben persistente. corpo piuttosto esile. nel complesso una pale ale media.

500ml bottle pours a pale amber color with a small white head that leaves a few specks of lacing. Aroma is caramel and grass and citrus. Taste is caramel malty sweetness with a generous grass and citrusy hop biterness. Light to medum bodied with some decent carbonation. a nicely done premium bitter that was quite tasty.

I know this says Bottle but the alias points here. Pours copper with a finger of white head that sticks around for a while. Asoka is subdued malt with some caramel bits, not pungent. Taste is nastier than most in the style but not a standout in any way. Creamy mouth feel is solid.

Bottle pour. Earthy, oak, vanilla, tangy sweet malts. Drinkable. Like the slight oakiness.

Dark copper pour, minimal head. Malt and some light fruit (peach, orange zest) in the nose. Slightly sweet malt across the tongue, but the taste does not keep up with the aroma. Medium across the palate. Finish drops a little flat. I had heard great things about this one, need to try again.
