COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Marston’s has launched Revisionist – a new series of beers that aims to show case the brewer’s five regional breweries, beginning with a lager from Wolverhampton. Revisionist Craft Lager has been created at its Park Brewery location and the man behind the beer, Simon Yates, has worked to blend an old world continental style while bringing in elements of new world hops. The beer, which is the brand’s first keg lager in 30 years, has used lager malt, a mixture of German Hallertau Magnum, Tradition, and Slovenian Styrian hops, as well as dry British Admiral and Boadicea hops. The end result is a refreshing four per cent session beer that has elements of citrus orange marmalade. With its Revisionist series, Marston’s has given its brewers the opportunity to rework classic styles with their unique ideas, while also using more contemporary ingredients and techniques.

The White Swan, Solihull, 06/04/14. Chill-hazed brilliant gold skimmed with white. Dank mildewed old lemon and lime aroma. Dirty mildewed citrus taste with salvaging cashew and biscuit. Some really rank bean sprout, mould and mushroom off notes. Not clean. Served in cleaner nick can imagine it being decent. Hints of soapy flowery Cascade. But this sample undrinkable. Rerate pending....

Keg at Wetherspoons (under Central Library), Birmingham. Thought I’d rated this ages ago. Quite pleasant sweet lager. Lacks a bit of lagery hop bite, but it’s ok.

Keg at Counting House, Glasgow - clear golden, thin off-white head, sweet lager malty, fruity aroma, non-existent lacing, bit of marmalade on the flavour, fruity, sweet, high carbonation, I would like to try this on cask

Keg at the Moon Under Water, JDW - London. Pours clear gold with a creamy white head. Aroma has notes of sweat, bread and cereal. Light sweet flavor with melon, plastic, grapefruit and mild bread. Light bodied with average carbonation. Slightly crispy cereal to finish with sugary bread, a but more plastic, dough, vague citrus. Not awesome.

Pint on draft. Crystal clear straw colour with a good white head. Very light floral aroma. Honey, light spice, floral notes and a lightly bitter finish (though still more bitter than might be expected). Not a bad effort for a craft lager. Marston’s attempts at craft beer have been generally disappointing to date so I hope this marks the beginning of an upward trend. Interested to try the Saison and wheat beer in the series.

On tap at Cross Keys, Nottingham. No aroma. None. Taste is slightly bitter banana water with no length to the finish. Really, really bad.
