3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep copper with spotty lace. Caramelized sugar and malt nose. Taste is peat, toffee sugar and dried fruit. Has a slight smokiness in the finish. This batch was listed as 8.8 %. You can pick it up only when warm. And I did feel it after the glass was gone. Decent but not amazing. Still worth a try.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
deep dark red with a beige head. Caramel, toffee, herbal evergreen, and biscuit round out the nose. The flavor is caramel-toffee with an evergreen hop background and a resinous finish. The palate is medium to full with a chewy mouthfeel and a smacking finish.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A reddish copper ale with a thin off white head. A light butterscotch aroma with a bit of burned caramel. In mouth, a lightly bruned malt with treacle, vinous notes, a bit oily, not bad. Warming alcohol. On tap at brewpub, Dec. 27 2009.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask (gravity) at NERAX North, Haverhill MA, 7 November 2009 @ 8.5%. Clear dark red/copper colour. Nice condition. Thin beige head. Good rich nutty and smoky malt aroma. Caramel malt flavour, but not oversweet. Twist of licorice. Smooth but full mouthfeel. Not generally a beer style Iím too keen on but this was a very tasty, likeable example.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Lacey off-white head covers the hazy dark copper. Sugary, peaty, very caramelized nose. In its cerealic showdown, thereís something to remind me of rice. Just very very sweet scotch ale from the front door that quickly, agressively becomes quite dry. It could use a darknening of its malts, because they show little character in there. Even though it sits at a reasonable 7.5%, it feels quite alcoholic. Very little complexity.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
In short: A heavily caramelized beer passing as a scotch ale. Below average for the style.
How: Tap at brewpub december 2007
The look: Cloudy brown body with a medium tan head
In long: Lots of not so very nice caramel. Something felt artificial/industrial in that caramel flavour. Very little in the way of residual sugar. Light dessert-fruits touch here and there but mainly it was just a whole lot of caramel with something off in it. Not bad but it didnít do it to me. As a scotch ale it is seemed as forced as kidís smile after receiving a sweeter from grandma for Christmas.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
My Bottom Line:
Well-positioned caramelization benefits from some smoke and earth to develop a healthy mouthfeel fit for sipping. Berry jam adds some panache, but ultimately, I feel this Scotch Ale could wisen up a bit.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam protects the reddish brown.
-A few more residual sugars would bump this Scotch Ale up a notch in my book, but it seems the drying factor was wanted by the brewer.
-Some maderization might take this into higher realms.
-Carbonation is smooth and fits the body size perfectly.
-Some earthy hop resins add a little bitterness to the ending.
On tap at the brewpub.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
on tap. Amber copper color, with a nice head. Aroma was sweet and malty. The flavor was sweet and malty as well. The alcohol came through on the taste, but it was welcome. Good beer.
