5 oz sample at the brewery. I figured I’d give this a shot on the off chance it was an altbier or vienna. No such luck. The second I took a sip I knew it was included in the dreaded American Dark Lager (aka Michelob knock-off) style. Has a tawny brown and copper colored body, perfectly clear, but with a nise sized tan head. Flavor up front it a little buttery, with some sour grains over the middle and into the finish, turning more towards soggy cereal grains as it progresses. Has the distinct chewiness of Munich malt throughout, with a slight maple sweetness as well, turning more bitter and husky in the finish. Close to a brown ale, flavor-wise, actually.

On tap, 10/25/07 as part of a sampler. Deep amber, white foam that dies quickly, no lacing. Decent enough amber lager, nice malt character, nothing exciting or unexpected.

If I was a comedian I would hit the microphone and say "Is this thing on?". Wow was this aweful. No aroma except a little malt. Pour was a decent dark amber with a nice 1 finger off white head. Problem was with the flavor. It was like seltzer water with a twist of malt. No aftertaste. No complexity. The friend I brought with me said he liked Yuengling better. ’Nuff said.

Draught at the brewpub. Pours copper with small beige head. The aroma is light toast, hints of apple and nectarine. The flavor is sweet at first touch, but dies out quickly. Toast, then some ashiness and fruit peels take over. Dusty finish.

Draft sample at Altoona location. Light amber clor, foamy, off-white head. Nice malt nose, slight hops, bit of malt, nice. Malt character, carmel and chocolate with a crisp hop finsih. Yuengling-esque, but better.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2007 Sampled at Marzoni’s in Allison park, on tap. I’m not sure if classifying this as an american dark lager is doing this justice. Darker than their 3 rivers gold. Same color as yuengling, not quite the brownness that we’ve come accustomed to in a dark lager. No head just a tea froth on top. Good malty initial flavor without bitterness. Balanced and enjoyable. Can barely smell the fragrance of this brew. Friendly and enjoyable., Good medium carbonation bite. Slight medium bitterness build on the palate with each sip during the session. Finishes with a low medium malty alcohol bitterness that is neither out of control nor offensive. Overall, a very enjoyable brew.
