Draft at Allison Park. Pours amber with an off white head. Aroma of bready malt, caramel, and brown sugar. Medium bodied and semi-dry in texture. Flavor of dark caramel, raisen, and light chocolate. There is a nice balancing amount of residual sweetness. Balancing bitterness on the finish. Not bad, but the sample I had lacked a wow factor.

Sampler at the Allison Park location, 02.03.08 (Super Bowl Sunday). Dark caramel, white head. Aroma is malty, spicy, and roasted. Flavor is caramel, honey wheat, bitter, slightly chewy. Nice balance between bitter and sweet.

Quite dark, like very dark root beer. Decent clean beer aroma, has a bit of roastiness on the olfactory. Taste of course, is a bit strong at +7%, but it’s not over the top like many other doppels. Background hints of hay and slag, in a good way. Malty alky palate but not offensive. A friendly entry in the doppel bock style and overall not bad. Finish is not as oppressive as I was anticipating. Short mild bitter ending.

Mjames left this growler for the tasting...that he didn’t attend; nice guy. Pours dark reddish brown with a diminishing head. LIght peat, smoke, caramel and brown sugar in the nose. Dark caramel, raisin, brown sugar and a light noble hop note at the end. Would have preferred it a tad less sweet. Medium/light bodied with soft carbonation. Quite enjoyable overall.

Growler, courtesy of mjames. Thanks, Mike! Pours a clear, reddish-brown color; light off-white head. Lost a bit of carbonation on the way down. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: pleasant sweet and roasted malt core; slight viscosity, hints of honey and sugar. Medium, sweet finish.

(growler, thanks mjames) Very small beige head (which I’ll blame on the growler, not the brewer) atop clear copper body. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, some raisin, light chocolate, herbal. Taste is sweet, chocolate/caramel, light earthy/herbal in the finish. Sticky medium-full body.

Draft at the brewery. Medium dark burnt brown and rusty red colored body. Faint nose of sweet tobacco, light cedar and cherry wood. Crisp and bitter, good and moderately thick even though in the glass it looks a little thin. Good toasted bread crust flavor, starchy and dry. Some light smoky dough in the finish.

From growler. Has a sweet caramel and toasted malt aroma, with a hint of diacetyl. Underneath is some oak and vanilla bean, Tootsie Roll. Mild fruity notes but not very hoppy. Dark reddish-brown clear, with thin off-white head. Medium-heavy watery body with medium carbonation, goes down smooth. Starts with good amount of malty sweetness, a bit of raisin and brown sugar or caramel. A bit of carbonic acidity and a little fruitiness with some diacetyl. In all, a good amount of maltiness. There is quite a bit of dry bitterness in the finish, which is well balanced in this case. Not harsh, but definitely a presence, the bitterness lasts well into the aftertaste, which also includes some oaky tannin notes and some vanilla.
