Commercial Description:
An almost obsolete (only one example currently being brewed) German Ale, this style of beer was very popular at the end of the 19th century in the Thüringen area of Germany. This is traditionally a pale beer brewed with lightly smoked malted barley and then allowed to become infected with lactic acid in the serving barrel.

This beer is the first half of two collaborative brews between Marzoni’s and East End Brewing, more to come on our other beer (another obscure German style, gose) later. Since I neither of us had wooden barrels to allow a lactic infection to occur and we didn’t want to risk infecting our regular equipment we decided to start off with a sour mash. A sour mash is basically mixing the malted barley with hot water and then holding it at 120 degrees for a few days allowing the natural yeast to create a wonderful lemonadey sourness. We then mixed this with smoked malt and a small amount of wheat and continued on as a normal brew day. We then added a small amount of lactic acid at the end of fermentation to try to keep the flavor to style again without risking a major brewery infection.

This light bodied, pale gold ale starts off with a noticeable but pleasant sourness, displays hints of smokiness, and finishes with a mild lactic bite. ABV – 3.0%

On tap in Duncansville. Medium smoky lemonpeel and honey nose, mild wheat. Lactic sourness and a bit of mild lemon sweetness. Hazy light amber, with cloudy yeasty swirls, with thin lacing white head. Light watery body with medium carbonation. Easy drinking with some carbonic acidity. Starts with tart lemon peel and light to medium smoked malt. Tangy fades away to a yeasty wheat and chalky bitterness. Lactic sourness lasts a while, but a fairly clean after with mild bitterness. Mild smoky after notes, too. This one will need to grow on you, but this is one of the most exciting beers I’ve had since probably Gotlandsdricke. Very cool beer, and kudos to Bill and Scott for pushing the envelope in west-central PA.

Pours an extremely hazy light pale yellow color with slight fizzy white head. Aroma is very very grassy with a bit of citrus. Flavor is grassy like a dortmunder, tart but not fruity. Dry and a bit bitter. Slight smokiness to it. Overall, interesting.

Another great by East End. This is the ultimate lawnmower beer. Nice floral aroma with light malt and yeast in the background. Pour was a nice medium gold with a 2 finger white head. Taste was very drinkable and refreshing. Light malt and smoke in the front that gives way to a lactic sourness in the aftertaste. As I had more of this the smoke gets stronger. A definate plus! Little carbonation, but the flavor stands on its own. Some yeast and lemon come out as it warms. Great beer!

A very interesting brew. Sampled at Pints for Pets. Pours a hazy peach flesh color with a small foamy head. Aroma is a little bit of spicy fruit. A sweet pruny caramel nose. Has a sweet yet smoky flavor. Very sour with a light bitter bite at the finish. Complex with a lot of bready characteristic. Medium body with a light carbonation.

5/17/08 - Sample at Pint for Pets. Pours cloudy yellow with skimming, foamy white head. Nose is slightly sour with some spicy wheat notes. Taste is sourdough bread, slight apple and a touch of smoke and slight oak.. A rather mild bitter, but more than I expected. Very dry. Such a different taste that anything I’ve had before. Great beer.
