To celebrate Boston Beer Week we invited the new brewers ont he block to join us in a collaborative brew. Mystic Brewery, Enlightenment Ales, Idle Hands Craft Ales and Night Shift Brewing all met here at CBC to create Mass Appeal, a strong blond ale brewed with malted barley and white from our friends af Valley Malt, fresh zest from nearly a dozen different varietys of citrus fruits plus their juice, Nelson Sauvin, Citra, Styrian Aurora and Sorachi Ace hops, and homade invert sugar syrup boiled up on the CBC patio. Fermentation was also a collaborative event, as each brewery contributed their own yeast strain and all five were blended and added to the word. Bright gold in color with assertive carbonation, tis light-colored beer packs a punch of complexity. Top notes of lime, orange, and grapefruit citrus meld with exotic hop character reminicient of passion fruit, flowers and white wine grapes. Dry on the palet but full-bodied, rich malt flavors provide a grounding balance ot the perceived sweetness contributed by fruit and hops. Under it all, a harmonizing contribution from our mixed yeast strains offers spiciness and further complexity.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the source.
Pours a slightly hazy deep amber with a decent white head that dissipates a bit to quickly. Smells of lemon and orange zest, slightly malty with sweet toffee and bready malts. Lots of earthy peppery yeast flavors as if one of the yeast strains is Belgian in nature. Taste follows the aroma quite well but drinks more like a Belgian strong than an American. Medium body and carb level with a sweet slick mouthfeel. Nice beer, glad I got to try it but probably wouldn’t seek it out again.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Cambridge Brewing Company. Pour into a tulip glass. Hazy burnt orange in color with stark white head. Lots of CO2 bouncing around. Noise is a touch herbal with strong grapefruit. Its a citrus and hop explosion, really balanced with a soft bitter finish. You can’t tell its 9% from the taste. Nice to sip on a hot day!
