A faithful reproduction of the classic Dark Munich style lager, Dogbolter is brewed from pure malt. Additions of roasted barley an caramel malt creates a dark, malty beer with roasted barley overtones.

Bottle. Pours jet black with nice tan coloured head. Nice aromas of chocolate & toffee. Some sourness and a little bitterness near the finish. Flavours are initially very sweet. Some bitterness near the end plus some more of that sourness. Not too bad.

Bottle. Average offwhite-tan frothy head overa clear brown (hints of black) body. Aroma and taste of molasses, tar, and roasted malts with a bitter, burnt, slightly acid finish.

345mL bottle. Pours a dark red-brown with a small and short-lived tan head. Malty aroma with hints of chocolate. The flavour is unsurprisingly dominated by roasted malt. Medium bodied, average carbonation with a slightly bitter and astringent finish. As with the Alpha; nice beer, horribly overpriced.

Bottle (new packaging). Pours caramel, huge tan head. Smells nutty and chocolatey. Some roastiness. Fairly thin body, not too sweet - I had it fairly cold to begin with, but it’s still not too sweet now it’s warmed up to room temp. Ends with a bit of chewiness. Carbonation helps keep the mouthfeel end up clean. A little woody at the end, too. Not really complex, but well-balanced and pleasant.

Dervock (404) - Emu plains, AUSTRALIA - OCT 23, 2009
Bottle - Pours avery dark, ruby under light with a tan head. Rich roast malt and molases aroma. The flavour starts off slightly sweet then a nice dry roast malt (coffeeish) comes through. Nice creamy mouthfeel. I don’t mind this at all!

Didn’t have high hopes for this, but still pretty ordinary. Tastes pretty commercial, with that sterotypical aussie lager twang. If this is a Dunkel I’ll go ’he’.

Bottle. I’ve never been a huge fan of Matilda Bay beers but this one is pretty good. Pours dark reddish brown with a decent tan head. Aroma is of coffee, malt and chocolate. Flavour has a lot of roasted malt and other grains, with lesser amounts of espresso and dark chocolate. The palate is surprisingly creamy and smooth, with little sweetness. Definitely the best beer I have had from these guys and one of the better Australian dunkels around.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2010 Bottle. This is an interesting dark lager. Aroma is roasted malt, biscuit, and chocolate; but it has some band-aid too. Tastes sweet all the way, with light bitterness. Colour is dark brown, with a thin head that disappears. Light to medium body, and velvety feel.

Draught. Pours brown with a small white head. Aroma and flavour of burnt malt, caramel, toffee and brown sugar. Good carbonation with a malty finish.
