3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
I poured a 12oz bottle into a shaker glass. It was bottled on 10/24/13 and cost $1.83 ($0.15 per ounce).
Appearance: Slightly darker gold than most pale lager. Plenty of visible, consistent carbonation. Pours to a small, white, sudsy head which doesnít retain well but leaves a surprising amount of lacing.
Smell: The usual corn-forward adjunct lager aroma. No repulsive characteristics or brewing flaws, though.
Tastes: Utica Club is generally considered one of the cheapest of the cheap beers and by the same logic -one of the worst of the worst beers. However, this reputation isnít really fair. While this beer is indeed pretty generic and lacks anything particularly special for the style, the fact remains itís pretty neutral-tasting with just a touch of genuine old world character to it.
Right away the taste is that of a standard adjunct macro lager: corn grits to be sure, though they are sweet like that of cereal and not vegetal or abrasive. There also seems to be minor malt flavor here: amber, pale, blonde malts to be sure, but maltiness nevertheless. The accentuate the sweetness a tad, making this a little more approachable than most of the general style. Nothing in the way of hops, though (not surprisingly). The finish is clean with a light, starchy aftertaste, but it fades quickly. Overall, a beer thatís decent in comparison to most of the style.
Drinkability: No one seems to know the exactly ABV of Utica Club. I toured the Saranac brewery and I got three different answers from three different people. Estimates seem to be between 4.8% and 5.5% ABV. Iíd peg it closer to 5% or 5.2% (regardless, it should have more flavor for this weight range). It drinks like a pretty light beer, but not a "lite" beer per se. The mouthfeel is thin, but not watery. Crisp, but not fizzy. Itís refreshing while in the mouth, but Iím not sure if this is worthy of sessioning.

Bottle shared by Leighton at the Downetowne Inne Bottle Share - thanks for my initiation into this exclusive club! Pours a pale gold, crystal clear, with small bubbles for a head. Notes of grainy, pale malts, light lemon citrus, and a dash of grass and sugary sweetness. Nice, clean lager.

>> Thank you Leighton for sharing your pride and joy with us. Pours a clear bright gold with weak foam. Nose is fresh grain, fresh grist, honey. Taste is clean, lemon, honey, cidery apple. Dry, papery, cidery body. Not bad though.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Light grain colored lager with a rim and some etching of fine whites. Brilliant clarity. Smells of sweet, white grape juice, some grass and not much else. Flavor also has the distinct grape flavor with some more grain and a bit of apple. Huh, empty body with moderate and sharp carb. A wet finish. I think this is very poorly crafted, but easy to drink. Fancy that.

Some random guy at Gathering of the Vibes: Pours yellow with white head. Aroma is grainy. Taste is grainy. Some light sweetness. Mostly tastes like a normal pale lager, but maybe a tiny bit more refined.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: pours a 1/2" frothy white head that recedes moderately and leaves some lacing. Color is pale straw and clear. Large amount of streaming carbonation.
Aroma: standard American lager aroma -- some grain husks, hints of sweet barley and a mild hop presence.
Mouthfeel: light and watery, crisp and refreshing with a dry finish.
Flavor: some corn and barley flavors combine wild a very mild hop bite in the finish.
Overall: Very pleasant for am adjunct style lager.
