3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
The best Hawaii-produced beer available. Had it on tap at SALT. Saw six-pack cans available at Whole Foods Kahala. As the only stout produced in the islands as I know it, I’ll admit that the Ba’kt’un only stands out in one way. While it doesn’t smell, look or feel like much, it tastes amazing. Strong elements of coffee and chocolate, but not bitter like most imperials and even some oatmeals. Rich and balanced.

Pours an inky black with a big, foamy light brown head. Malty aroma with chocolate. Lingering spice taste. OK but not great.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours black with a light brown creamy, rocky head with little lacing. Aromas of dark chocolate, toasted nut, peppers and hints of coconut. Smooth flavors with a fairly medium body but a bit thin and watery.

Great up front; thins out and dries out too much toward the finish. Chocolate flavors are on the weak side. Clove is a bit overdone. Chilies and cinnamon are nicely far in the background. I like the chocolate + chilies + cinnamon interplay, but I’m not so sure about the clove and the Belgian yeast. They just seem to be out of place and conflicting. Aside from all that, it’s a decent brew.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Spiced chocolatey aroma. Black color with a tan head that settles down to wisps. Excellent roast-chocolate flavor with a very light touch of the cinnamon and heat of the chilies in the finish at the back of the throat. Delicious

1.9 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20
Poured from twelve ounce can into Riedel Overture beer glass. Coy sooty and ashy smells were difficult to extract from the beer unless practically scuba diving in the tarry, black as pitch brew. Its display enviable to even the most ancient volcanoes as a thick head resembling igneous rock and bonfire smoke rose to surface where it remained. Then, there’s the first anticlimactic sip. Intense minerality and cedar flanked by thinly grated chocolate atop horribly extracted espresso. Chipotles make their appearance on the finish and feel restrained, more like bell pepper essence than anything involving capsaicin. The peppers are exemplary of what’s wrong with this concoction for without a malt backbone other flavors fall flat. Mouth feel is unsubstantial and more watery than the Pacific. Could be remarkable if Maui Brewing would refrain from reigning in the additives and malt.

Can from Bine & Vine. Pours dark brown with a dark tan head. Aroma is primarily chocolate with underlying cinnamon and something that might be chili. Full bodied. Flavor is dark malt, chocolate, definitely something chili, and lets the cinnamon flourish in the finish.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can. Black hued body with a large tan head that lasts. Aromas of dark fruit esters, plums, dates, vinous Belgian yeast, bready malt, leathery and floral with a moderatly strong chocolate presence and some earthy chipotle. Baked apples and chocolate muffins. Flavors are earthy, bready, dusty and roasty with mild pepper and stronger chocolate. Medium bodied with a roasty finish. A bit drier than expected. Medium carbonation.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Nearly black in color with a tan head. Watery aroma with a decent amount of roasted malt. Mild earthiness, coffee grounds, banana, and a touch of sweet fruit. I don’t really get any spice from the cinnamon or peppers. The flavor is acidic, earthy, and roasty. It’s also a bit watery. Some coffee, mild spice, chocolate, coffee, and banana. Pretty meh.
