Sure.. the scientists have published essays, the philosophers poems, the naysayers flyers.. but here at the center of the Maui Brewing micro-verse, we are publishing the ultimate in doomsday aloha Ė this yearís last canned seasonal, Aloha Bíakítun! The word aloha conveys both greeting and goodbye in the Hawaiian language and Bíakítun refers to the 3000+year cycle of the Mayan Calendar which is ending. This apocalyptic Belgian-style stout is brewed with Hawaiian chocolate, locally-grown chipotle chilies and cinnamon spice.

12oz can. Poured a dark black color with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted chocolates, dark malts, touch of dried fruits, pepper notes, cinnamon and a little cocoa. Flavor is roasted notes, malts, touch of light pepper heat in there, with cinnamon and a long lasting chocolate notes. Not nearly as enjoyable as I had hoped, but okay.

Nearly black in color with a tan head. Watery aroma with a decent amount of roasted malt. Mild earthiness, coffee grounds, banana, and a touch of sweet fruit. I donít really get any spice from the cinnamon or peppers. The flavor is acidic, earthy, and roasty. Itís also a bit watery. Some coffee, mild spice, chocolate, coffee, and banana. Pretty meh.

Great up front; thins out and dries out too much toward the finish. Chocolate flavors are on the weak side. Clove is a bit overdone. Chilies and cinnamon are nicely far in the background. I like the chocolate + chilies + cinnamon interplay, but Iím not so sure about the clove and the Belgian yeast. They just seem to be out of place and conflicting. Aside from all that, itís a decent brew.

I was looking forward to this one, but it is simply "okay" - their coconut porter is much better. Anyway, nose is roasted malt and cocoa, as is flavor. Most of the advertised spice in the flavor profile is in the dry finish, and in a blind test I probably could have been convinced was just lingering bitterness from the cocoa. A decent beer, but nowhere near as interesting as I had hoped. Also, Iím confused as to what makes it a Belgian-style stout. Oh well.

Smells a little chocolaty, a little like coffee, but kind of funky too, I think from the pepper. Pours deep black, canít see at all through it even when held up to the sun. Tastes a little smoky, bitter finish, overall kind of weak.

Can. Pours a dark brown with quickly diminishing brown head, minimal lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, dark chocolate, slight smoke, mild chili and heat, hint of tobacco. Flavor is mild chili up front with a chocolate, fruity, mildly roasted finish. Quite sweet as usual. Moderate carbonation, medium body, and a smooth texture. The chilies and chocolate are an interesting combination, but it is too sweet to drink much of.

Maui Aloha Baktun 5/15/13 very handsome faux Polynesian can. Nose is Belgian yeasty notes, wheat, chocolate, and a blossomy fruitiness. Dry mouthfeel, almost chalky, with flavors that start with dusty chocolate and incorporate fruit and nut nougat bar. The cinnamon is there, but why? It seems to dry out the finish even more. Just a touch awkward. 3.1.

Can. Reddish black with a thin tan head. Aroma is peppered malt. Flavor is velvet chocolate, a little spice, roast malt on a dry roast light pepper base

A very unique beer. Pours a brown-black with a tan head. Smell is strange. Spices and chipotle, but not particularly appetizing. Taste is better. Lots of chipotle and some cinnamon. Some spicy aftertaste. Taste is better then the smell, interesting, but couldn't have too much. Had in the can. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
