India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

Aroma is dominated by the hops - mostly pine with a touch of citrus. Color is a clear amber with a slight to medium off white head. Taste is dominated by the bitterness of the hops. Medium body with a reasonably long bitter finish. Overall a nice example of an IPA.

Purchased at a random grocery store in Honolulu, HI; enjoyed at a friends place with two days left on my Hawaiian vacation, dreading going back to frozen Chicago. Appearance is a lightly cloudy darkish gold with a huge frothy white head that nicely laces to the glass. Aroma is pretty great, nice hoppy profile with a bready malt undertone, also light spruce notes. Taste goes down nice and hoppy, English hops are most prominent, and gives it a bitter yet drinkable flavor. Iím liking this one a lot, one of the best IPAís Iíve had in a while.

A fairly cloudy orange with a nice foam. It began to clear as it warmed. Clearly, pine hops and citrus dominated the profile. Good body, but the flavor was actually muted. Hop bitterness and a toasted bread malt laid the ground work. It wasnít until the beer warmed that the hop flavors showed themselves and then only in the finish.

Can: Pours a hazy peace juice color topped with a large, sticky & soapy off-white head. The nose is aromatic; citrus and pine. Itís sweet and has enough pine resin to just about cover up a light bit of bready malt. The taste is a straight forward dry-hop wallop. To me it hides everything else. Lingering bitters in the tail. I havenít had anything like this in a whileÖ itís a welcome change. Nice effort, but at $3/can...

Nice golden colour. Off white head that disappears within a minute or so. Fruity on the nose, but not overpowering. Pleasant on the palate. Flavour is slow to build.....then you are hit with a nice bitter after taste. Really nice brew.

On tap at the brewery, Brewpub, poolside at the Sheraton and various restaurants. A few of the Maui Brewing beers were available everywhere on this part of Maui. Poured a hazy amber-gold with a fine, off-white head and lace. Aroma of biscuit, pineapple, caramel and orange. Taste of biscuit, pineapple, citrus, tropical fruit and caramel. Medium body and medium carbonation.
