India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

Another disappointing canned beer. In fact I would have been better off if this disaster would have been left in Hawaii.......

12 oz can from Maui Brewing company thanks to some nice neighbors. Golden colored pour with a fluffy three fingered head. Quite effervescent, bubbles continue to steam as Iím drinking it. Very nice hoppy aroma, piney with some citrus notes. Smooth creamy mouthfeel with some hoppiness but not too bitter at all. Finish is a bit dry but leaves a bit of a bitter bite on the tongue. Iíd imagine it would be perfect for laying on the beach in Maui.

This stuff is seriously $16 a six pack...? Pours a clear darker golden biscuit color with a big white frothy sudsy head. Aroma is a bit weird, funky weed, biscuit sweetness, grass, toffee, stinky, Iím guessing this has English hops..., stewed beats. Flavor is mildly hoppy, light sweetness, fairly dry, biscuity, toffee, very bitter, grass, dry dead grass, alcohol is very nice though, quick finish leaving behind toasty bitterness. Nice body, quite drinkable, soft and full with perfect carbonation, crisp sizzle but not overly aggressive.

12 oz can purchaced in a bar in Lahaina. Head is thin and leaves no lacing, though thatís probably mostly due to the frosted, moist glass I was given. Aroma and taste are all hops. Itís a very good version of a West Coast IPA, Hawaiian style.

Mahalo! Can while on vacation on Maui. Pours a cloudy amber with a 1 finger head. Nose is sweet malt and floral hops. Palate is citrus Ė grapefruit and orange with a touch of pine in the finish. Medium mouth feel with minimal lacing. Not bad, and you gotta love that itís in a can.

Can. An unclear amber beer with an off-white head. The aroma has strong notes of hops as well as notes of malt, grass, and grapefruit. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and hops - the latter lending it notes of grass and grapefruit, leading to a dry and bitter finish. Nice.

Caramel nose, poured golden and unclear with a medium head. Hoppy bitter without being too bitter. Creamy body. Just perfect!

Canned. Thx to my SS (Boutip). Golden coloured. Unclear. Dense beige head. Aroma of pine, flowers, caramel, sweetness and light citurs. Flavour of caramel, pine, flowers, light spice and some grape. Medium to full bodied. Caramelly and citric bitterness in the end. Nice and after a couple of tries, at last Iíve managed to taste a beer from Hawaii.

Can (in NZ). Looks superb - beautiful orange-amber colour with a large frothy off-white head. The interesting nose is a mix of citrus, pine and floral - along with some caramel. A persistently bitter palate only partially gives way to flavours of toffee and just a little grapefruit. A long savoury dryness follows, with plenty of heat. Delicious on a mild winterís evening.

Pours hazy orange with a big frothy beige head. Aroma is noticeable from far away and is mostly tropical citrus. Beautiful taste of tropical flavors again and a mild pine finish. This is how I like my IPAís a perfect balance between sweet floral and citrus hops with enough resin and herb to kick in on the bitterness. Medium body with lots of small bubbled smooth carbonation.
