India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

Big flavorful IPA. Not sure if itís exactly my cup o tea, but the Big Swell has plenty of hops and an overall unique taste. Definitely worth a try.

Can. No glass available to pour, but you can instantly smell hops. The flavor is very good, very bitter with hints of citrus and floral notes. Lasting bitter finish. This is my first IPA in a can and I admitedly thought I would be dissapointed. I was wrong. It is very freshing and a decent IPA. I am not a big fan of English Kent Golding hops, but I still enjoyed this beer.

Can (survived the journey back from Maui), pours pristine copper with a towering fluffy white head, aroma is sharp w/citric hop and balanced w/ some sweet malt, flavor is cereal malts w/ more sharp citrus at finish, smooth flavorful brew

12 oz can (thanks to Jessica). Pretty pleasant overall here. A fairly thick, hoppy aroma with some sappy pine, fruity citrus, light herbal grass, and nutty bread. On the pour, a large creamy, white head, translucent body and golden orange in color. As expected from the aroma, the body of this one is pretty chewy, and slightly sticky, not all in a negative way though. A nice hop profile that is fairly well balanced with nutty caramel and cracker grains. Bitter notes mostly of woody pine, and mixed citrus fruits, also with a some herbal grass. Not too bad.

Poured out a clear dull amber brew with a decent sized white cap on the fuzzy side and leaves sloppy lacing. God damn does this smell freaking excellent! Sweet and caramelly with a boat load of peaches, ruby red grapefruit, nectarines, weak amount of resin. Damn stuff smells mouth watering - pretty straight forward aroma but thatís ok cause itís got massive presence. Ahhhh, this is just what I wanted - tasty flavours and lots of bitterness. My love of the taste is waning as I go though - seems to consistantly start empty before revving up mid taste.. or in this case the beginning.. what the hell am I talking about? Caramel, peaches, grapefruit, tropical fruits (light), pine. The mouth feel is bugging me - comes across pop-like - a fine bubbly pop but it has a good body to it. Finishes malty with medium lengthed bitterness that is not crushing. This beer really faded from a standout first impression to less than impressive. I still liked it enough and wouldnít hesitate to buy it if I ever saw it.

Can. My second IPA in a can. Not bad. A real good IPA. Great pour. Nice orange copper color with a nice white head. Aroma was pines, citrus, and grass. Flavor was big and aggressive. Hop bite in the aftertaste. Sticky mouthfeel. A great IPA. I love this beer.

A golden brown beer with a nice head. The aroma is sweet, citrus, and pine. The taste is nice citrusy, pine with a very smooth ending. A nice IPA.

In trade from bhensonb I believe, awhile ago. Golden orange, huge rocky head. Aroma has a nice balance of floral and juicy citrus up front, huge malt sweetness coming through. Flavor much the same, residuel sweetness takes over a bit. Another beer I owe a rerate to. Probably pretty solid fresh.

Beers always taste better in Hawaii. At the yard house, which I highly recommend. 100 taps. Aroma is bright hops. Color shines a dark golden color. Taste is ideal. Hops, sugar, alcohol, and fruit.

On tap at Cafe Mambo in Maui. My estimation of IPA just keeps going up and up as a taste more great ones like this. Really enjoyed this one, which seemed to have more characteristics of an APA but still the recognizable hoppy bitterness of an IPA. Almost like a perfect mix of both syles - the flavour of an APA with the more complex palate of an IPA. Rosewater, passionfruit, superbly realised maltiness and great lingering finish. Very welcome on a hot Maui afternoon.
