India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2013 HOPS! Holy insert Biblical reference! Can from the ABC Store on Ka’anapali Beach. Pours a deep golden yellow with a fairly frothy head. Aroma is floral, hops and grains. Quite a creamy mouthfeel, and super amounts of hops. Still, even with the bold hop flavour, it isn’t entirely unbalanced, and is impressively satisfying. Yay Maui Brewing Co.!

Can:   Gold, slight haze, large frothy white head, clumpy lacing.   Candyish sweet hops, citrus zest, and evergreen or pine on the nose.   Sweet citrusy hops on the tongue.   My kind of IPA.   Clean on the exit, a little bit of bitterness emerges after the citrus sweetness dies down.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Good solid example.   More citrus zing than most, and enough of a malt background to carry it.   Good stuff.

Floral overtones with a bit of sweetness (maybe a little honey with slight citrus). I’m not usually a big fan of overly hoppy beers, but I really like this one. It goes down smoothly with some hoppiness, but not overpowering or bitter. Good clean finish.

Can from my parents’ trip to Maui. Oranredishamber pour leaving some lacing. One inch creamy head fades to ring. Aroma of citrus and grass. Nice malt sweetness quickly attenuated with a lingering, moderately bitter finish. Sweeter that most IPAs I’ve had, but, that’s OK with me. Even my anti-hop wife likes this one.

Well-hopped with a creamy mouthfeel and floral notes. Slight dark chocolate after-taste adds a sort of "stickiness" at the back of the throat that is very enjoyable.

Pours from can a nice clear light golden hue, forming a craggly white head of foam. Lacing very evident, aroma nice of light pines, ocean water and malted sweet goodness. Flavour was pine driven with a malt balanced character. Very drinkable beer, proud that it comes from my home state of Hawaii. Hana ho!

First off love the can! I wish more breweries went to cans, but anyway the pours is a cloudy orange with a small white head. The aroma is very hoppy with citrus and pines. The taste is of citrus and pines with a bitter finish. Good beer, definitely drinkable!

Can from Hi-Time. Man, the can movement is on fire. This is another excellent product from the good folks in Maui. Beautiful golden body with big head. Hoppy nose but not too much. Refreshing and cool texture with plenty of big wave hops gushing around. Really nice.

Can. Awesome. 090109 date on the bottom. Fresh enough. Medium-light gold, strong creamy whipped head. Softer aromas of lime leaf, orange and dried leaves. Creamy head leads to a creamy body, sweet cotton candy base, green Cascade-y hops and some bubblegum.

Pours orange/golden with an orange head. The aroma is doughy, caramel, citrus, and mildly piney. The flavor is cookie dough, caramel, and citrus fruit. Full bodied and tasty, but a little on the sweet side for an IPA for me.
