COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

12 oz can. I could smell the hops as soon as I pulled the tab. Really attractive looking beer. Sublime even. Poured a murky medium orange color. Head was thick and rocky with good retention and lacing. The lace was that sticky, clingy stuff that really impresses. The aroma was nice, too. I smelled the malty caramel and sprucy hops I’ve come to expect from American IPA’s, but there was also some vanilla frosting and grapefruit. Prickly on the tongue with ample carbonation. There was moderate hop bitterness of about 6 out of 10 which was balanced well against ample malty sweetness. The flavors were a little fruity and a little malty, but more hoppy with sprucy/citrusy/flowery hops dominating the more submissive caramel and apricot. This one grew on me more and more as I drank it and definitely it improved as it warmed up a bit. Everything in balance. Nothing over the top. Very good.

Intense pine, resin, citrus nose. Amber/orange/gold. Great malt sweetness balanced by hoppy bitterness. One of the better IPAs out there. The aroma is intense and is present in every sip...another great beer from Maui Brewing.

Microbrew in a can, turned out a lot better then I had thought it would. One of the better beers I had in Hawaii while I was on vacation. Nice IPA. Nice citrus and pine notes in the flavor as well as the aroma. Tasty.

2008 – Great Hawaiian Beer Run
Aroma – Nice hoppy aroma with a good malt background.
Appearance – Amber in color, clear with a nice head.
Flavor – Nice hops flavor this was a decent IPA. The malts where sweet and the bitter hops added to the flavor. A very nice IPA.
Palate – Great Mouthfeel, good texture with a dry finish.
Overall – I liked this beer it was one of the better Hawaii beers. The IPA flavor was very good. I will recommend this to friends.

Appearance: Pours a clearish, dark amber body with a fizzy, off-white head. Smell: Herbaceous, pine needle-strewn scent with notes of grapefruit segments. Some pale malts as an afterthought. Taste: Sharply herby, with further hop flavors of pine and citrus. Not too terribly much in the way of malt or sweetness, which exaggerates the medium bitterness. Piney, herbal hints in the bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Drinkability: Decent enough for an IPA.

Pours a transparent copper orange with a spotty-lacing froth of off-white head. Aroma of fresh citrusy resiny hops with pale malty undertones. Body starts lightly malty sweet and has good resiny piny hoppy balance. Finishes drier, bittersweet and crisp. A pretty nice and drinkable IPA.

Six pack of cans purchased from the Safeway grocery store on Kaui ( also found at Safeway on Maui). Compared with the other IPA’S availble on the islands this is far superior. Great hoppy aroma, large off whit ehead, with lacing. Very well balanced sweet malts and sticky hops. Made sitting at the beach in the sun very enjoyable. Glad I brought a few home with me.

Drank a bunch of these on Maui recently. Rich copper hue with a nice and creamy head. Bright, inviting nose was filled with a banquet of hops and fruits. Malts were on the sweet side, not surprisingly, with notes of caramel, candy and lightly toasted grains. Hops and esters were exuding with tropical fruit from start to finish. Mango, agave, kiwi, starfruit, papaya, you name it. Overall, it was a pretty drinkable IPA that I kept going back to (partly because I had no other choice, but also because it was a decent beer).

Light brown rather than golden or amber, with a small white head. Nose of hops and malts, less sweet than most American IPA. Can talks about American hops, but this seemed to me to be more of a Kent Goldings kind of IPA. Better than I expected.
