India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

Pours attractive ruddy copper with a full cream colored head that persists. The nose is rich with pineapple and caramel. The flavor follows suit with an additional earthy influence. Subtle bitter finish.

In short: An extra refreshing IPA focussing on the orange/pine-cone juice hops with little malt distraction
How: Can, sample at Mondial de la Bière 2008
The look: Cloudy glowing orange body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Nose is fruity and foresty with a little cat litter. Body is very fluffy. Malt backbone is discrete, not a whole lot of caramelized malts here. Sweetness flavour is dried fruits and some honey. A lot of hops and then some more. Hops fruitiness is orange followed by pine-cone juice. Bitterness of medium intensity. An overall crisp and fresh sensation. A ton of hops and a discrete malt profile usually bothers me but this one is so refreshing that the slight unbalance is actually quite fitting. Drinking it I was imagining myself on a Hawaiian beach on a hot sunny day and all the scenery that comes with it… my pants were feeling much tighter than usual.

Again, I can’t get used to a great beer coming from a can, but Maui Brewing may convert me. Pours an oily gold with a big white head. Fresh hop aroma with lots of pineapple and grapefruit. More grapefruit, pineapple, mango and orange hops in the taste with a subtle caramel malt back. Light, sweet, and bitter all in one package. A great IPA.

Can from BevMo. Copper/amber color with a multifinger beige head. Impressive citrus/floral hop aroma. Flavor is lightly roasted caramel with floral hop. This comes on more like an English ESB than a NorthWest IPA. Oh, it’s not a NorthWest IPA. Rather smooth and lightly bitter finish. Extremely pleasant and tasty.

12/29/07 notes: Hawaii pride! Had in can on Maui at Hali’imaile General Store. Aroma of intense citrus-grapefruit and flowers. Flavor features tart grapefruit notes, orange, and some light sweetness. Finishes smooth w/ light bitterness. A real pleasure to drink, and quite a find out in Hawaii.

Golden with a white long-lasting head. Big citrus nose, but there is also some malt balance on this one. Taste has lemon, grapefruit, and other citrus flavors. The malt backbone comes through moreso in the taste than in the aroma. Medium bodied and carbonation. Thanks to marchcow for sharing.

Objectively speaking: Another fine American IPA straight out of a can.
I like: Perfumey, strongly exotic hop nose. Crisp body. Focused oranges layout. Bready, caramelly, comfortable maltiness procures lots of sweetness, but the bitterness level is appropriate to balance it out.
I dislike: More crystal than pale malt character. Not terribly complex.

Another well made great american IPA, no need to get into aroma, and flavour we all know what hops taste, and smell like. All you need to know is this is a great IPA. Hop heads rejoice!

Cloudy amber in color with huge head and lots of bubbles. lemon EKG hops in thnose are very nice. Nice wallop of hops, mainly citric, lots of caramel malt backbone, some juicy resin, and a tangy hop finish. Aloha indeed, nice beer. Thank Torry.

2008-05-31. Hazy orange, nice creamy beige head. Pleasant orangey hop aroma. (8+) Similar orange hops in the flavour start things off nicely, grass and resin grow in the finish. (8+) Smooth average palate. Very drinkable. Lovely. (Not sure if these scores would be quite so high on a re-rate but apparently I quite liked it!) Can, Mondial, Montreal, 3T
