India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

(Can, courtesy of blutt59) Pours a clear copper body with a thick foamy long-lasting off-white head. Aroma of pineapple, apricot, grapefruit, lime, and toasted barley. Flavor of citrusy hops, caramel, and toasted malt. Has a nice carbonation upfront that extends to a soft mouthfeel and mild bitterness in the finish.

12 0z. can, good yellow gold color with grapefruit nose, very nice balanced taste and smooth slightly bitter finish, quite a surprise for an island beer

Can courtesy of a traveling colleague. It’s strange being a fan of craft year and being aware of the stigma beer has compared to let’s say wine. However, even knowing how off-base the bias is, I tend to apply a similar stigma to canned beer. This beer went a long way in breaking that stigma. Anyway, the beer pours a mostly clear dark amber-orange color with a thich and foamy light beige head that diminishes slowly. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Hoppy aroma with notes of citrus and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of grapefruit, hops, toffee and malt. The finish is dry with a grassy hops aftertaste that lingers awhile. Solidly above average all around.

12-ounce can from mixed-6 in Kona. Labeled 6.2%. Light-to-medium body, well-carbonated with a pronounced hop flavor and bitterness. Little detectable malt with a sharp bitter finish. Even for an IPA, very out of balance. Not pleasant.

12 oz can, purchased at Foodland, Princeville, Kauai. Another tasty beer from Maui Brewing. This actually came in a sampler pack which contained two IPA’s, 2 Bikini Blondes and 2 CoConut Porters. All three of the beers turned out to be very good and easily the best thing I have found on this island. There is nothing outstanding about this IPA, it’s fairly tame by San Diego standards. But, it’s tasty, easy to drink and in this area where Steinlager reigns supreme, this is curing my hop fix. Awesome looking can, too.

Bottled. Thanks Bolagshataren - here’s looking at you kiddo. Pale amber colour with average sized head. Flowery tea-like(reminiscent of warrior) hops in aroma. Pretty much 1-dimension here. Loads of flavouring hops, that might subtle down the bitterness, that is approximate to 50 IBU maybe? Tasty beer with easy drinking and medium body, not very complex.

Can from Nathan on St Patrick’s Day. A Hawaiian beer to celebrate America’s favorite holiday. Very sweet nose. Flavor matched but with a hop kick. Mango, orange, pine. Smoky pale golden in color. Left nice lacing. My favorite of the Maui Brewing Co that I have tried.

In Can from HI to Oregon from friend. A nice nose-typical Cascade based IPA. Pretty malty and bit sweet. Nearly no head, cloudy. A decent IPA nothing special in the saturated IPA market.

Can thanks to hopdog. Pours a thick and cloudy light amber with nice big thick head. Citrus, hoppy with flowery nose. Flavor big hoppy with a great mouthfeel to it. Good balance of the malt that comes off a with a nice sweet roastyness to it. Nice smooth finish.

This much sought-after brew pours an extremely cloudy, burnt orange-amber color. A small, foamy, off-white head settles to a thin film. Ribbony, sticky rings of lacing circle the glass. The aroma proudly displays big toffee malts, offset by huge notes of grassy, citrus, and tropical fruity hops. Grapefruit, orange, and mango all jump out in the full, pleasing nose. The flavor has alot to live up to, and unfortunately it falls a bit short. The theme is the same, and the toffee and the grass hops come through well, but the fruity hops aren’t as well integrated. There’s also a dulling graininess that hinders things a bit. A substantial and smooth body benefits greatly from the obvious lack of filtering. This is a very enjoyable brew that I would drink quite frequently if it was available. These guys needs to start shipping to the mainland.
