India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

12 oz can brought back from Maui. Murky golden orange with smallish head. Lots of citrus hop aromas. Apricot and mango too. Flavor was greenery and more citrus. Sweet sweet grapefruit finish. Pretty tasty

Amber with big white mousse head. Aroma of fragrant and citrus hops. Flavor is sweet malty with nice hops. Quite sweet and isn’t too bitter. Nice smooth, full body texture. Overall it is good but a touch too sweet.

UPDATED: MAY 13, 2013 Very nice. Hazy and slightly dark orange pour with big foamy head. Very apparent hops in the wif. Initial flavor comes smooth then has a kind of explosion of flavor. Does infact finish with a lingering bitterness. Reminds me of Sierra Nevadas Celebration Ale and holds its own against it.

I’ve been saving these cans since July and now at the beginning of the Iowa winter, a little taste of the islands. Starts out with a strong hoppy aroma. Golden orange color with a white head. Sweet creamy cheese flavor on a creamy palate. Smooth and very delicious. Good IPA.

Thanks for sharing a can, marchcow. The body was hazy medium orange with an off white head. The araom was light grapefruit and caramel. There was also a peanut note. The taste had the expected grapefruit and bread crust, but was fairly light. The body was rich. Nicely done.

Thanks to hopdog for bringing this one back from Hawaii. Pours a hazy golden amber with a medium bubbly off white head that left lacing. Aroma of fresh hops, pine resin, citrus notes, caramel, pineapple and a touch of earthiness. Flavor of pine, hops leaves, caramel malt, grapefruit and some earthiness. A well done IPA, would love to have this available locally in cans! Nice hop bitterness with some malts to balance.

Defintely reminds me of so many beers....true "steady-eddie" IPA, not too hoppy, but present in every sip, good call on the Kent Golding hops, pleasent good tasting, a real relaxiing IPA, but what did you expect from Maui. Cheers to the Maui Brewing Co.!!

12oz can. Poured a deeper and hazy / cloudy amber color with a large sized off white head. Aromas of juicy oranges, grapefruit, pine, and pineapples. Tastes of citrus, pine, and light caramel. Sitting here in Maui drinking this makes this even better!

Thanks to dickinsonbeer for bringing this to the pre-Kennett party at egajdzis’ place the night before the fest... Appears a hazy orange with a white head of fluff that slowly fades into a mild film. Spotty lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of heavy citrus, pine, herbs, and earthiness. Not bad from a can! Taste is of the mentioned aromas with some light caramel found swirling around this hoppy goodness from Hawaii. Mouthfeel is yesty, medium bodied, with herbal bitterness battling out some sweetness that eventually fades into a pine resin, bitter finish. Pretty good stuff.

Can poured a hazy dark copper with a large lasting ivory head and leaving behind lots of lace. Aromas of carmel, pine, earthiness and light citrus. Palate was medium bodied smooth and slightly dry. Flavors of carmel, earthiness, light pine and hints of grapefruit and orange with a smooth lingering bittert finish.
