COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

Can. Golden with a fluffy off white head. Aromas are biscuit and caramel with oak and woody pine. Pineapple with marzipan and bready, doughy yeast. Flavours are pineapple and bitter grapefruit with sweet caramel and spicy pine. Warming alcohol with low pine bitterness. A fairly mellow IPA. Good.

Smells hoppy, strong citrus aroma. Poured can to glass; light orange, a little hazy with a white head, about one finger. Tastes just like an IPA should, smooth, hoppy, and has a finish with grapefruit and hints of malt.

In Maui had this delicious IPA. Malty yet smooth. Bitter but not too much. Was very surprised at how good this beer was. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can from Asahiya. Big grapefruit and tropical fruit (mango and pineapple) nose. Deep golden straw, very thin filmy head. Fruity and balanced initial, a bit tart / a rush of hops in mid -- and it seems just right / pleasant and balanced finish. Medium body. Very nice US-style IPA, with an island emphasis. Not overdone ... but done well.

Strong hoppy nose with fruity citrus notes and some tropical fruit. A slight metallic hint but not much. Flavour follows the nose - deeply hoppy with lots of mango, kiwifruit and lychee and a big, long, lingering finish. Very nice.

Can at Aloha Mixed Plate in Maui. Pours a clear straw color with a big white head. Nose is citrus and hops, toast. Flavor follows with a decent malt balance. Good but not unique.

Pours a slightly hazy orange color. Big white head with good retention and lacing. Very nice aroma of citrus and piney hops along with some caramel sweetness. Flavor is similarly well-balanced. The caramel malt is a little more noticeable, but really enhances rather than detracts from the hoppiness of the beer. Medium-full bodied and a touch undercarbonated for my taste, but a really very good beer.

Somewhat foggy in clarity with a bright, golden orange color and a very billowy, frothy white head, this is one smooth, fresh, fruity IPA. What stood out the most from the start was how intense the head was. "Big Swell," is right! Segments of the lacing protrudes from the side of the glass by a good two millimeters. I’m actually very impressed by this beer. It has a light, soft, fresh and fruity hop aroma with a touch of pine - this, well-balanced with some great, light/moderate caramel malts and a soft breadiness really makes for a welcoming nose. More pine comes through in the flavor, but the softness in the nose shows in the mouth as well, offering a very smooth, almost creamy mouthfeel overall. This feels and tastes like a very well-brewed beer with elements of tropical fruitiness, a modest malt sweetness, a wonderful palate overall with a very pleasant mouthfeel. This is close to perfect for an IPA in my books, but I hold back my kudos just slightly because I feel like I’m being teased by a more acute hop flavor that isn’t quite being delivered. Its finish is just as great as the flavor, wrapping up very well with a nice hop and malt flavor lasting for 30 seconds after the beer’s gone down. This is a beer that I’d definitely suggest to the ladies I know who enjoy IPAs (or at least have the potential to).
