The lager is named after the legendary lava rock formation on Ka’anapali Beach which Hawaiians believe is one of three uhane lele, a place where souls of the dead leap from earth into their ancestral spirit land and where only a person with great spiritual strength can enter that world and return.

The Black Rock Lager embodies its name by beginning with crisp yet shallow bitterness and slightly smooth and roasted malt flavors before rising to a heavenly floral and spicy finish. An American Dark Lager, the Black Rock Lager contains 5.5% alcohol and 25 IBUs. Guests can enjoy this deceptively dark yet rewardingly refreshing craft beer while watching history come to life as the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa reenacts the legendary Cliff Dive Ceremony every evening at sunset.

Very enjoyable brew. Pours a dark muddy brown with a tan head atop. The aroma is malty with light roasted toffee and molasses malts, light hops are almost not present. A creamy malt base with a dry finish. Nice bready and molasses malt flavours that gives a good body to the brew. Overall, a good sessionable dark brew.

Dark brown color. Off white head. Some nice dark fruit notes in the nose. Dry, decent dark fruitiness, lacks a bit of roastiness and bitterness is low. Simple, but pretty enjoyable.

Draft - Date and some grain sweetness. Deep maroon with a small white head. Date, raisin and some nice pale malts. Thin, light and dark fruit, just what I like.

On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours black with a reddish tinge and a small beige head. Nose is very dry, with chalk and dirty earthy notes. Flavour is dirty and earthy, with some crusty bread notes dominating. Pretty bleh - seems burnt and too dirty. Not too pleasant.

At Cliff Dive Bar at Black Rock! Dark brown to black in color with a tan head. Good dark roasted flavor with a bit if huskiness and some light dark chocolate and wood notes. Slight bitterness in the middle. Body is thin to medium as it should be. Finishes light and dry. Nice Schwarzbier done island style.

Approximately 3-4 oz sampler at the Brewpub in Lahaina, Maui. The pour is a mostly clear black brown with a small light tan head. The aroma is roasted, slight char malt, along with a touch of malt sweetness. The taste is lightly sweet malt, followed close behind with the big char roast. Clean, crisp, nice subtle flavor. The palate is light bodied, featuring crisp carbonation and a dry mineral finish. Nice one.
