Our Coconut Porter is a classic robust porter spiced with all natural toasted coconut. It is black in color and crowned with a creamy, dark tan head. It begins with a malty-toasted-coconut aroma followed by a rich, silky mouthfeel with tastes of dark malt, chocolate, and hints of coffee. It then finishes with flavors of toasted coconut and hoppy spice to balance the finish.

This is ok but where is the coconut. My smeller and taster must be broken because I am not getting the coconut. It is a good creamy porter but I feel not as advertised.

Pours from the can (I love saying that) with a two-finger thick, lightly browned, tan colored head. The beer is a an almost black color, with perhaps just a hint of amber to it. It is opaque when held up to the light, but did show a clear, dark chocolate color as I was pouring it. The aroma is nicely roasted with touches of tart, burnt grain, some dark chocolate notes, sharp espresso aromatics, a light roasted nut note, some light vanilla like notes and a dark sweetness that likely comes from both the coconut and the beer. Not overtly expressive of coconut aromatics, instead it melds into the normal dark grain notes. The aroma is quite nice though and definitely worth exploring for a bit.

This has a soft creamy mouthfeel to it with a bit of viscous heft, but somehow remains light and quaffable at the same time. Dark milk chocolate flavors combine with flavors of mocha ice cream and a finish that is reminiscent of a lightly bitter shot of espresso (though still a sweetened one). The finish has a deeply toasted, nutty note that lingers on in the mouth for quite some time. The chocolate flavors in this brew are quite pronounced and quite nice, this is really accented by the low hop character here (both flavor and hop bitterness are really not all that perceptible). As the beer warms up quite a bit, a very slight, burnt vegetal note becomes noticeable.

If given this beer blind I would never have guessed I was getting a coconut flavored brew, having said that, I can see how it influences the flavor profile, but one could do the same thing by manipulating standards beer ingredients (with perhaps some toasted oak note thrown in). None of that keeps this from being quite a tasty tipple though. I really like the mouthfeel of this beer; soft and creamy yet still quite quaffable.

12 oz can from Padrefan98, thanks to the bestest trading partner ever!! Fantastic aroma of roasted chocolate malts with just the right amount of coconut added in for a truely memorable aroma. Pours a slightly thin looking deep black with a foamy light beige head. Palate on this one is average body with strong carbonation biting carbonation. Flavor is sweet roasted malts with chocolate, light coffee and more sweetness, I’m guessing from the coconut. Really glad I got a chance to try this one and it only gets better as it warms, must be great on the beaches of the 50th then.

Bière #2 au Mondial 08 (28/5/08), canette. Chocolat noisette, mince collet. Arome très chocolaté, malte torrifier sucré avec un peu de lactosse. Goût de coconut enrobé dans du chocolat, un peu sûrette et légèrement malté. Le plus doux porter que j’ai gouté à date!

My Bottom Line:
A coconut-ridden jungle engulfs the lean caramel maltiness of this interesting, but unidimensional novelty Porter.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the brown-sleeved black.
-Goodness gracious, that’s a lot of coconut!
-Even though this is quite sweet, the body’s lightness makes the overall result rather drinkable (if you have a sweet tooth).
-I’m not nuts for coconut, so this coconutty concoction is not my cup of cocoa.

Bottle, thanks so much to SQNfan! Pours a nice black with a tan colored head. Aroma is nice with coffee, coconut, caramel. Flavor is creamy and rich with a nice toasted coconut flavor. Very good mouthfeel. This is a great beer. When the beer gets a tad warmer the coconut really shines through.

Sparky (2244) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - MAY 27, 2008
Sampled at Hellbilly’s Hellraiser II. 12oz can. Pours a deep, clear black with minimal tan head. Nose is earthy, fresh coconut milk and coffee. Palate is coffee, cocoa, hazelnut and light coconut – almost like a coffee drink with flavored creamer. Medium slightly creamy mouth feel. Good stuff.
