Dogfish Head superstar – Sam Calagione, will be our fearless collaborator! The result – a beer-epiphany never before innovated called Liquid Breadfruit!

To celebrate the cornucopia of a Maui-grown harvest, we will ingeniously combine local breadfruit (or ulu) & toasted papaya seeds into the recipe of an imperial golden ale fermented using Dogfish Head’s DNA (Delaware-Native-Ale) yeast. You won’t want to wait until October to try it, but oh it will be worth the wait!

12 fl oz / 355mL can into a Blue Moon glass. Served cold. Aroma: Sour fruit. I’ve never had a breadfruit before, so I can’t say if this smells like one or not. It does smell good though. Appearance: Hazy burnt yellow. Foamy white head that lingers a little bit. Taste: Tart fruit. Sourish yeast. Pears! Pretty tart beer, if you’re into that. Palate: Medium body, longish finish. The 8.2% is hidden quite well, so watch out. Overall: Made me really want to go to Hawaii and try a breadfruit!!

I picked it up for about 600 yen from Antenna America. 8.2% it pours a great gold color and has a tropical fruit aroma which is normal as it is made with breadfruit & papaya seeds. Golden ale, then papaya, a hint of nuttiness before finishing with a crisp bitterness. This beer would rock at the beach! A nice mildly fruity golden ale.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber tinted yellow gold. A white head quickly subsides to a thin film.

Aroma: Fruity Belgian nose. White grapes, ripe cantelope, banana.

Taste: Sweet toasty malt, spicy belgian like yeast. Peonounced Spicy euro hops. Citrus and ripe melon fruitiness between the malt and hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Dry prickly bubbles.

Overall: Very tasty, very drinkable for 8.2%, and the fruit pops out as it warms up.

Can. Pours a slightly hazy golden with big white head. Aroma is DFH IPA, slight tropical fruit. Fresh papaya is there but then the rancid garbage papaya sneaks in and takes the cake as the beer warms. This is an example of what BMC tries to do. This beer at first was awesome, cold out of the fridge. As it warms.....eeeek. The taste is tropical fruit forward at first, when cold and some mild bread. As it warms the DFH malt bill comes out and is very pronounced from their IPA line. I guess that is the yeast.

[Canned 12/31/12] Hazy orange color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, toast, tropical fruits, some oxidation. Taste of citrus, toast, orange, tropical fruits, and a semi-sweet finish. Oxidation was surprising given the age.

Can from Wine Warehouse Charlottesville. Pours a clear golden amber color with fine and sparse floating particles. Medium sized creamy tan head. Breadfruit is indeed an apt name. Aroma of bready, nutty notes with tropical and mild sugared fruits. Faint hoppy finish. The taste is earth notes, caramel, bread, stone fruits and a nearly salty note. Medium bodied. I quite like this.

12 oz can. Pours a hazy golden orange with a big meringue white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is wit-like with some tropical fruit and funky yeast and pepper.

The flavor is earthy yeast with light tropical fruits and some peppery spices. There’s some phenolic bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with slightly sharp carbonation.

Overall, it’s more yeasty than fruity but a bit phenolic.
