COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This red ale, brewed with Liliko’l and Michigan cherries is ruby red in color, tart and refershing in flavor. Working with Ron is something I’ve wanted to do since I had my first Jolly Pumpkin Beer. Years later its a reality. Being involved on this project was an honor and a privilege. Mahalo to my MBC crew and to you, fans of craft beer. Aloha, John Walsh.
Yes, Michigan and Hawai’i are connected. It should be obvious to you know, as you hold this beer, and read this label. John and I designed this beer with two noble fruits from two noble states. Michigan & Hawaii. Cherries & Lilko’i. Starting to see the connection? I feel it. So does John. 4391 miles may separate our breweries, but not our thirst for the exquisite. Hipa! - Ron Jeffries

Hazy red golden pour with white head. Cherry dominated aroma. Flavor is very muted, light cherry skins.

Can shared with Linh at hamiltons. Pots a deep, ruby red body with thin off white lacing. Aroma is very faint fruits and light tea. Mouthfeel is medium to thin with notes of tea leaves, cherries, and light fruit malts.

Serving: can at Fire Works Leesburg. Pours a hazy reddish brown with a large tan head. The nose reminds me slightly of a flanders red with less tartness and more sweetness. The flavor is oxidized cherries, slight passion fruit, a little sweet malt up front, slight nut or dark bread notes. Light body. Okay.

20120708 12oz can from Wine World. Clouded dark amber with lasting tan head. Aroma is twigs and berries, like the prunings from an orchard, with some soaking beans and uncrushed cherries. There’s a constant theme of anticipation with this one, like there’s something great to come just on the next sip, but it never happens. Unless you’re into the flavor of rotting tropical fruits, this one’s never happening. Dry, harsh, twiggy, and laughingly $16 for the 6 pk. I’m sure passion fruit or whatever is expensive, but this beer is an insult.

12oz can from Perfect Pour. $5.50 rip off. Pours fizzy cloudy, dirty orange. No head formation or retention. Caramel and toffee nose with sweet strawberry and air freshener. Taste is bitter, buytric, buttery, lemon juice. Palate is bitter, chemical, sharp. Very poor. Bland and butyric/bile character. Abrasive chemicals.

Can courtesy of GT2, thanks! Murky amber color, small white head. Aroma of pineapple and berries. Taste is sour berries, grapefruit. I’m not sure if I’d recognize a passionfruit if someone hit me in the head with one.

It’s a bit difficult to rate this beer, since I am going in knowing that this is, essentially, going to be a base beer for a Jolly Pumpkin sour - it’s tough not to go into the experience thinking, "what will this beer be like after the JP treatment?" - the aroma initially hits you with the earthy hop of grain bill of your standard american amber ale - kind of boring, and a bit "soil like" - however, what follows is some interesting tart and earthy cherry (meat, skins, pits) - the flavor is initially tart, with complex cherry character - this is followed by some toasty maltiness, leafy hop character, moderate yeastiness - hmmm - not really bad, just kind of muddled - I actually see a lot of potential for JP to make this into something great - I think Maui got the short end of the stick on this collaboration.

Can. Copper pour with a strong, fizzy tan head. Aroma is sweet and very fruity with berries, tropical fruit and cherry juice. Taste is cherry juice, tropical fruit notes, tart berries, fruit preserves and slightly funky yeast notes. Light earthiness as well. Body is light-medium with a soft, creamy carbonation. Slightly dry during the finish as well. Ends with more cherry juice, slightly tart berries, tropical fruit, hint of cranberry, and soft yeast.

This is nice. Aroma is passion fruit, tropical notes, bit of malt bread, and a tiny whiff of cherries. Appearance is red with a slight cloudiness and an off white head that dissipates and leave little lacing. Taste is surprisingly dry and tart with much more cherry than the nose. Palate is dry and refreshing. I’m glad I got a 6 pack of this. Good refreshing summer beer.
