This red ale, brewed with Liliko’l and Michigan cherries is ruby red in color, tart and refershing in flavor. Working with Ron is something I’ve wanted to do since I had my first Jolly Pumpkin Beer. Years later its a reality. Being involved on this project was an honor and a privilege. Mahalo to my MBC crew and to you, fans of craft beer. Aloha, John Walsh.
Yes, Michigan and Hawai’i are connected. It should be obvious to you know, as you hold this beer, and read this label. John and I designed this beer with two noble fruits from two noble states. Michigan & Hawaii. Cherries & Lilko’i. Starting to see the connection? I feel it. So does John. 4391 miles may separate our breweries, but not our thirst for the exquisite. Hipa! - Ron Jeffries

Can. Pours a decent amber with a nose of Hawaiian breezes spiked with mango, pineapple, and cherry. Flavor is a swirl of fruit punch flavors- pineapple, mango, cherry, orange, kiwi- finished off with a light touch of sweetened toast. Average mouthfeel. Would be great if not for the watery note present. Needs to be ’thicker’.

A slug of sludge that I wasn’t expecting makes this beer a murky, bright, pomegranate red hue when held up to the light, otherwise it is a dark amber hue. The head is only about a ˝ finger thick, and is a pale tan color. The aroma smells like tropical fruit that has a musky edge to it, as well as lots of whole grain toasted notes. There is an earthy edge to both the fruit and the grain character here; there are also dried grass, sort of dried weed like notes here, but the musky, tropical fruit character is definitely the dominant character in the aroma.

Somewhat full bodied, slightly sweet, but actually more dry than I was expecting, the beer has a really weird, musky fruitiness to it that lingers on the palate. A carbonation that provides some fizz helps to counteract the viscous character that seems to be contributed by the fruit character somehow. There is a light tartness here that seems wrapped up in, and must be contributed by, the fruit character; there is that musky, tropical fruit character and perhaps a touch of tart cherry edginess. The finish has a full, toasted, slightly spicy, maybe even somewhat dirty crystal malt flavor to it that is a bit too heavy in the finish as it clashes a bit with the up-front fruitiness. I am not sure if it is the sludge or not, but this tastes a bit muddled and murky somehow.

This is quite the interesting beer, more as a contrast to the Jolly Pumpkin version; I am certainly a sucker for Jolly Pumpkin, so take this with a grain of salt, but it is interesting to me that the JP version was so much more integrated and not so jarring. This is definitely not bad, and is even fairly enjoyable, it is just a bit of a let-down after having the JP version.

Can:   Dirty caramel, a little reddish, thin sudsy off-white head, little to no lacing.   Huge grainy nose.   Seems slightly sweet, but if this is a Fruit Beer I am the Pope!   Slightly sweet start, bubbley, very grainy, with maybe a smidgen of underripened cherry like flavors that show up towards the back.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   A little dry on the backside, but the graininess just overpowers this one.   Slight pine needle comes out as it warms.   I don’t know what this is supposed to be, but it doesn’t work at all.

Bottle; poured a muddy dark orange color with a medium sized light khaki head. Aroma of caramel, nuts and tart cherries. Flavor was pretty mild all around, with a strain of flavor common to all their beers. Mild tartness and hints of cherry. Alot of caramel. Cool can, beer was rather mundane.

Can. Reddish amber, cloudy, no head. Slightly tart aroma with more sourness in the taste... Not overpowering. Gets better as it warms up and releases more.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2012 Was an extra from my eBay connect. Thanks, h2olove! Pours a smoggy chestnut auburn with a quickly diminishing head. Smells nice, perhaps too nice: passionfruit, peaches, white nectarines, earl grey tea, apple cider and yeast. Tastes of bubblegum, funk, green apples and hay. Has a watery mouthfeel with an uninteresting bittersweet aftertaste, but I can see myself drinking a lot of these.

12 oz can. Hazy brown with brief froth. Nose is passion fruit and sour cherry with a touch of earth. Juicy medium body with a crisp tingle. Sadly the flavors fall flat. Minerally, pithy, pomegranate pits and faint red fruits finishing with cherry skins. Could use more fruit but this is on the right track.

Hazy redish brown with brown/red foam head. Aroma is bread with some cherry in background. Taste is thick, siropy, bit sour beer with again cherries but also some dough. Aftertaste is mixture of cherry again and sour dough. Not my style of beer. (Salt Lake City 201208)

Can. Pours murky, amber/brown with a trace of fizzy white head which quickly dissipates. Aroma is figs, cherries, bread and cereal malts, grassy hops, caramel, and light woody notes. Flavor is malt dominate with some supporting fruut esters and faint hops; dry finish. Medium body, low carbonation, and low warmth.
