Fin (2164), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Jul 17, 2006 Cask conditioned at Merton Beer Festival Fri July 7th 2006. Black in colour with barely a head, roasted notes not too disimilar to the E&S 1872 Porter also available, but different in many other ways, much smoother, more chocolatey very full flavoured and dare I say it a bit more refined than the Porter, this really was a stunner. Not the sort of beer that you would ordinarily go for on a summers evening but it was smashing, all the same I think that had I have had this in the depths of winter it may have scored higher still.
bobinlondon (215), Harrow, Greater London, England Jul 13, 2008 Handpulled cask at JDW Hatch End in recent international beer fest. Jet black, excellent lasting creamy beige head and good conditioning. Appealing aromas of creamy bitter coffee and chocolate but a little muted, soft yet full bodied and fruity in the mouth with a vague hint of tart woodiness and dominant bitter sweet roast barley notes. Lingering coffee and chocolate dry bitterness with a touch of oak and peat in the finish. Class beer.
weaselkenievil (295), Cheshire, England Jul 5, 2008 Cask at Macclesfield Beer Festival. Burnt malt, coffee, caramel, nice amount of smokiness. Liked it indeed. wheresthepath (213), Buckinghamshire, England May 16, 2008 [cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading] Smoke and coffee on the nose. Tastes of coffee & coca cola, like a sweeter smoother guinness without the carbonation. A hint of smoke in the flavour, lots of treacle, some plummy fruit, and quite sweet and syrupy (but not unpleasantly so) by the end. berkshire_john (1035), Bracknell, Berkshire, England Apr 10, 2008 Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Deep reddish brown with a trace of tan head; rich fruity aroma; fruity and weet, thick and chewy in the mouth with hints of raisins, plums and sour cherries; lingering, sweet, port-like, warming finish. Magic_dave6 (3642), London, Greater London, England Apr 7, 2008 Cask in counting house. Aroma is roasty, chocolate malt, quite burnt as it goes on. Taste is quite burnt and molasses add a bitter sweet character, medium body, chocolate malt tries to save it though.
