2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Pawola22 (2211) - Chicago, USA - AUG 2, 2010
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep brown body with a finger-width, creamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a good amount of lacing. Aroma is straight up hazelnut. The intense sweet nuttiness isn’t offensive, but its way too much. Not a whole lot of anything else on the nose. Flavor is better, but still over-the-top hazelnut. There is some roast and deep caramel with a light, earthy bitterness. A touch of chocolate and coffee too. Pretty dry with a lengthy aftertaste. Medium, creamy body with a light carbonation. Overall, an intensely nutty beer. Fairly sweet with a better flavor, but this didn’t quite work for me. If the hazelnut was toned down a bit, this would be much better.

Part of sampler at brewpub. Pours murky brown with small tan head. Aroma is extremely nutty with tons of hazelnuts. Flavor is all hazelnut with some chocolate and coffee. Not the biggest had of hazelnut but this works quite well. Pretty tasty beer.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - DEC 22, 2004
14 oz glass at the brewpub. Absolutely opaque thick brown with a small stubborn head...nuttiest aroma I’ve ever experienced, more oily and pungent than sweet, roastier as it warms...massively nutty in the flavor (I think it’s brewed with real hazelnuts, and a lot of ’em) though the porter roastiness isn’t totally overwhelmed...vanilla/mocha character shows up late along with some bitter coffee...body quite full and supple.
