Known for their rich, full body and warming alcohol notes, imperial stouts were originally brewed to please the Czars of Russia. Max Imperial Mocha Oatmeal Stout has a smooth creamy body and a rich roasted malt character with distinct chocolate and coffee notes.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a black body with an inch thick, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is thinner, oaty chocolates with a light roasty coffee. A bit smokey and leathery. Flavor is better, but still on the thinner side. Doesnít drink like 10%. Some richer chocolates and smooth oatmeal with a solid roasty balance. Light mocha flavors with some leather and the roasts seem on the edge of hard, but not quite there. Finishes dry with a roasty bitterness and a lengthy aftertaste. Medium body and silky, but a bit thin at times with a light carbonation. Overall, a decent impy. Much better flavor than aroma and easy drinking for 10%, but a bit too thin IMO. Still, enjoyable and not bad.

Pour was dark brown, not black, small finger width head. The aroma was roasty malts. The flavor was dark, bitter chocolate, some coffee and some lactic flavors. Hard to believe this thing was pushing 10% abv, as the flavor was kind of bland and pedestrian...almost like a non-imperial stout like flavor. A bit disappointing, I might say, given the name promises a bit more of an experience.

In short: A nice peaty chocolaty imperial stout. Good beer.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head with good retention
In long: Nose if chocolaty. Taste of chocolate cake, more creamy than roasted, black chocolate, peat, good amount of grassy hops. Not much alcohol presence. Appropriate medium carbonation. This was a satisfying imperial stout. Cannot play with the big boys but considering the lacklustre reputation of the brewpub I consider this is a solid offering. I visited this Atlanta brewpub when I had to spend a night in the city because my connection flight to Rome was delayed. Thatís how I am, I try to turn any unwanted situation in an enjoyable experience. When a door-to-door salesman comes to my house I like to listen to him while sharpening a knife and smiling.

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2009 Location: On tap at the downtown Atlanta location 4/16/09
Aroma: : Coffee, chocolate, roasted
Palate: Too thin I thought and not well balanced
Overall Impression: On the board they called this one the IMOS, I asked the waitress what IMOS stood for and she said she didnít know! (Wow...)

The ratings here seem a bit high to me, I thought it was a pretty thin and watery stout...Not something Iím looking for in this style. Itís got a nice mix of ingredients, but the lack of body threw me off.
