4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 CaptainCougar (6857) - Columbia, USA - MAR 3, 2004
Pours a thick oily robust black with a dense tan head. Has a rich chocolatey mocha aroma with some hop presence. Body starts sweet with a dry coffee bean finish and caramel malt throughout. Good balance, but could be a bit thicker. Overall a very nice beer though, and one that IMO is more than 6% abv ;)

Growler. Black pour. Aroma was rich milk chocolate mixed with a deep roasted malt character. Very nice. Flavors were heavily roasted with subtle nuances of cocoa and vanilla, lightly sweet. Finish was bittersweet, lingered nicely. Body was creamy and full, not too shabby!

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a black body with an inch thick, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is thinner, oaty chocolates with a light roasty coffee. A bit smokey and leathery. Flavor is better, but still on the thinner side. Doesn’t drink like 10%. Some richer chocolates and smooth oatmeal with a solid roasty balance. Light mocha flavors with some leather and the roasts seem on the edge of hard, but not quite there. Finishes dry with a roasty bitterness and a lengthy aftertaste. Medium body and silky, but a bit thin at times with a light carbonation. Overall, a decent impy. Much better flavor than aroma and easy drinking for 10%, but a bit too thin IMO. Still, enjoyable and not bad.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Goodgrief (1656) - Middletown, Delaware, USA - MAY 16, 2010
Pour was dark brown, not black, small finger width head. The aroma was roasty malts. The flavor was dark, bitter chocolate, some coffee and some lactic flavors. Hard to believe this thing was pushing 10% abv, as the flavor was kind of bland and pedestrian...almost like a non-imperial stout like flavor. A bit disappointing, I might say, given the name promises a bit more of an experience.

In short: A nice peaty chocolaty imperial stout. Good beer.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head with good retention
In long: Nose if chocolaty. Taste of chocolate cake, more creamy than roasted, black chocolate, peat, good amount of grassy hops. Not much alcohol presence. Appropriate medium carbonation. This was a satisfying imperial stout. Cannot play with the big boys but considering the lacklustre reputation of the brewpub I consider this is a solid offering. I visited this Atlanta brewpub when I had to spend a night in the city because my connection flight to Rome was delayed. That’s how I am, I try to turn any unwanted situation in an enjoyable experience. When a door-to-door salesman comes to my house I like to listen to him while sharpening a knife and smiling.
