COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
St. Mungo has a sweet malt character achieved by boiling the “heavy” first runnings of the mash along with dark brown sugar to caramelize the sugars. This complex caramel character is accented by a faint smokiness in the finish. English East Kent Golding hops round out this extremely drinkable, full-bodied ale. Served unfiltered.
IBU 18 ABV 9% O.G. 22.5º Plato
Our "wee heavy" scotch ale recipe name in honor of Glasgow’s Patron Saint - St. Mungo. Saint Mungo established a religious brotherhood in Glasgow in 540 AD. One of the brothers started brewing to supply his fellow monks, establishing brewing as one of the oldest industries in Glasgow. Since Max’s St. Mungo has come in at approximately 9% ABV, we have declared it a "90 Shilling" Scotch Ale. And in keeping with our Drink Beer Do Good campaign, Fifty Cents of every St. Mungo sold will be contributed to the Gateway Center for the Homeless and the Atlanta Union Mission.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours golden dark brown to deep orange with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet and fruity. Rather sweet flavoured. Malty to caramelish toffee. Lingering sweet caramelish finish.

This beer is extremely woody in all aspects. It has a very distinct cedar-like must to it that was slightly overpowering but not overly unpleasant (maybe due to the addition of some smoked peat). There are also some sweet caramel flavors in play that help to round off this 9% ale. Not bad I just prefer a little less musty peat flavor and more of a smoky sweet malt character in a scotch ale.

Draft @ the brewpub. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a sweetish malty spicy caramel aroma. Sweetish malty spicy caramel flavor with hints of dark fruit. Has a sweetish malty spicy caramel finish.

Tap. Tulip glass. Medium reddish-brown color. Aroma of salt air, light smoke, caramel, light toast, malts. Flavor is sweet malts, nice toast, some bread. Tons of caramel. A great beer to sit and sip and chat it up.

Cask @ 2010 ATL Cask Ale Tasting. Poured copper with a thin tan head. Nose was somewhat fruity, with big caramel notes and some more subtle peat smoked malts and some earthy hops. Medium body with soft carbonation. Flavor is malty with a good bit of caramel sweetness, there’s also an earthy nuttiness that I like and mild to medium peat smokiness. The smoke became more apparent the more I drank. Good stuff.

Cask and on tap at brewpub. Poured a reddish brown with a light tan head. Nose was sweet dark fruits, caramel, and earthy notes. Taste was similarly sweet, fruity, earthy, and a bit smokey. Light hop bitterness in the finish. Body is medium. Overall, a decent brew.

The only new thing they had when I dropped by this week - the hoppy beer wasn’t ready quite yet. Pours a deep reddish amber, nice tan head. Aroma was caramel and dark fruits. Flavor matched - rather sweet and fruity. Hint of smokiness was very, very faint. Some earthy hops were rather clear on the finish as well. A bit too hoppy and fruity for my preference, but not a bad brew.

Copper pour with light white head and lace. Tart fruity aroma. toasted caramel malt, sweet, light medium bitter finish with a hint of abv. Solid body with light carbonation. Pretty nice beer.

on tap-pours a light tan head and copper color. Aroma is sweet medium malt-peat. Taste is sweet medium malt-peat/caramel, secondry earthy hops bite, some fruit.
