Malty bitterness with a sweet edge to it, but it also has a great textural balance.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 16, 2012
Clear 500ml bottle, best before 28 Jan 2009, drank on a cold, damp UK evening in Nov 2008.
Poured into a pint sleeve glass.
Drank this beer years ago at the Vaux Brewery Tap before watching Grimsby Town play at the Stadium of Light. The brewery closed a few years later and the beer is now brewed in Stockport, miles from Sunderland, its original home, not that the label tells you that!
Teak red/brown in colour, bright and clear, the off-white started thinly and got thinner as i drank down the pint.
Fairly sweet aroma, some toffee and caramel mix to give it an intersting smell.
The aroma flavours follow into the taste and a toffee feel is there for all to find. Very ’more-ish’ a beer that is extremely drinkable.
The 4.7% is well balanced and the overall experience was a good one. A good bottled Brown Ale.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 will1 (140) - Hampshire, ENGLAND - MAR 2, 2012
Lovely dark colour with a really creamy head. Aromas are sweet and bready: malt, golden syrup and a hint of yeast. Initial tastes are also sweet, with the bitterness kicking in then leaving a sweet aftertaste. For a brown ale this seems quite full bodied.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 superflyguy (349) - Leeds, West Yorkshire, ENGLAND - JAN 7, 2012
a mixed blessing.
one of the best looking bottled suppermarket beers. great deep brown colour, lovel fluffy head.
genlte aroma of malt and toffee notes. slips down quite well, but I don’t really like the signature of Brown Ale so it’s never gonna score that well!
pleasent semi sweet bitter finish.

Dark red-brown colour. Aroma has some woody notes. A flavour that is rich in slightly roasted, slightly bitter-sweet malts. Aftertaste is quite dry but with a little bit of fruitiness hanging around too.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 niquillis (428) - Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, ENGLAND - MAY 17, 2011
Bottle from Sainsbury’s, Hexham. A real brown ale from the North East, very nutty but slightly over carbonated.
2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 AndrewC (265) - Canterbury, Kent, ENGLAND - APR 29, 2011
Crystal brown colour. Fizzy stuff. Toffee apple, bit of peppery spice, bit of malt. Smells a bit twigglety. Clean tasting. Not unpleasant but it gives me the impression that it’s the drinking equivalent of staring into the distance at a dead horse.
