COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available in pasteurised bottles and cans. Produced at Robinsons until Maxim opened their own brewery in 2007.
NOTE: The cask version has a separate entry.
Double Maxim is brewed using Maris Otter & Crystal Malts and English Golding Aroma Hops. It delivers a mouth of full and rounded flavour that is well balanced and smooth and leaves a pleasant and lingering and slightly sweet aftertaste.
Roger Protz described it as "an undoubted classic. It is a fine example of a North East brown ale. It is a good balance of ripe grain and spicy hops, with a long bittersweet finish."

Malty bitterness with a sweet edge to it, but it also has a great textural balance.

Clear 500ml bottle, best before 28 Jan 2009, drank on a cold, damp UK evening in Nov 2008. Poured into a pint sleeve glass. Drank this beer years ago at the Vaux Brewery Tap before watching Grimsby Town play at the Stadium of Light. The brewery closed a few years later and the beer is now brewed in Stockport, miles from Sunderland, its original home, not that the label tells you that! Teak red/brown in colour, bright and clear, the off-white started thinly and got thinner as i drank down the pint. Fairly sweet aroma, some toffee and caramel mix to give it an intersting smell. The aroma flavours follow into the taste and a toffee feel is there for all to find. Very ’more-ish’ a beer that is extremely drinkable. The 4.7% is well balanced and the overall experience was a good one. A good bottled Brown Ale.

Lovely dark colour with a really creamy head. Aromas are sweet and bready: malt, golden syrup and a hint of yeast. Initial tastes are also sweet, with the bitterness kicking in then leaving a sweet aftertaste. For a brown ale this seems quite full bodied.

a mixed blessing. one of the best looking bottled suppermarket beers. great deep brown colour, lovel fluffy head. genlte aroma of malt and toffee notes. slips down quite well, but I don’t really like the signature of Brown Ale so it’s never gonna score that well! pleasent semi sweet bitter finish.

Dark red-brown colour. Aroma has some woody notes. A flavour that is rich in slightly roasted, slightly bitter-sweet malts. Aftertaste is quite dry but with a little bit of fruitiness hanging around too.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s, Hexham. A real brown ale from the North East, very nutty but slightly over carbonated.

Crystal brown colour. Fizzy stuff. Toffee apple, bit of peppery spice, bit of malt. Smells a bit twigglety. Clean tasting. Not unpleasant but it gives me the impression that it’s the drinking equivalent of staring into the distance at a dead horse.
