A “very sweet brook” welcomed the cold and thirsty Pilgrims to Plymouth. Today, it provides us with the soft water that is perfectly suited for brewing lighter-colored and milder beers. Mayflower Golden Ale is crisp and dry with a slight malt flavor and a subtle hop spice. This straw-colored ale provides easy drinkability for the novice yet plenty of flavor for the most discriminating connoisseur.

Good drinkability though a malt story. Deep golden body with foaming offwhite head. The aromas are a little distracting. Good malts, with a mild hop finish, nicely carbonated. Refreshing on the first warm day of spring. Thanks Jay.

Bottle leftover from camping up at Hill Farmstead. Pours a clear gold with a medium sized creamy white head. Soft hay, a bit of green apple and yeast over some candy sugar. Medium bodied, creamy, a bit of cream ale flavor and some off flavors as well. A bit bitter on the finish. Not bad, not great.

Pale golden colour with a sticky white head. Aroma is softly fruity. Light apricot and a bit of soft spicy hoppiness. Lean pale malt and a bit of grassy/herbal hops over the light crackery malts. Nice soft aroma with a little bit of fruitiness. This sort of reminds me of Coopers Sparkling Ale, with the mix of soft apple and apricot fruitiness and light spicy hoppiness. Soft palate... really quite tasty.

This poured a straw to golden yellow color with a white head. Aroma was grainy pale malt, some yeastyness and nothing else really. Flavor was light, pale malt, a little grain, bread and some biscut. Nothing offensive but extremely boring.

12oz bottle from Georgio’s, Billerica, MA. Pale amber with a thin white head and high carbonation; grassy aroma; soft with a grassy bitter taste; and a rather watery finish with a trace of spice.

Golden pour with a fluffy white head and lace. Aroma of light malt and not much more. Flavor of semi sweet malt with a bit of a cloying sweet finish. Medium bodied with excellent carbonation. I think this may be one of the best golden ales I’ve had. It didn’t have much on the aroma but pretty flavorful for a golden.

Pours light gold into a shaker. Bright white head with very good retention leaves spotted sheets as it recedes to coat surface. Light malt aromas. Crisp and light with a dry cracker finish.

Blanchard’s, Allston sixpack ($10.69): Pours a pale golden color with a small white head. Aroma is of a little bit of bread, some straw, and a pleasant amount of hops. Basically, this beer is a refreshing and very crisp golden ale. Moderate amount of hop bitterness, and the hop character is actually pretty well done. Malt backbone is not the fattest thing in the world, but is sufficient for my palate. I thought it was good, though not extraordinary.
