As the British Empire expanded, English brewers added extra hops to keep beer fresh for increasingly long sea voyages. The beer on board the Mayflower shared this trait. Mayflower IPA puts a descendant’s twist on this style, with a powerful hop profile balanced by plenty of malt character. We use the freshest hops from the Pacific Northwest to give this beer its distinct, piney flavor and delightful, fruity aroma.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, tropical fruit, pineapple, tangerine, and a hint of diacetyl. Poured amber in color with a small, rocky, white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Hazy. Very sparkling. Flavor light to medium sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of hops, tropical fruit, tangerine, slight crystal malt, and citrus. Medium body. Thinish texture. Average carbonation. Hop, malt, tangerine, and citrus finish. 7%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Hazy orange coloured body with a gold glow and a nice dense deep tan head and a trillion bubbles rising from the bottom. Aroma of candy sugar, yeast, wheat, fresh herbal hops, a touch of grass and some mild hay. Light to Medium-bodied; Some undeveloped hops and yeast flavour start out strong with a good malt backbone and a touch of grassy and herbal flavours throughout. Aftertaste shows a bit of hop bitterness, some grass and hay tastes and a bit of a mild finish, with some lingering bitterness. Overall, a decent IPA - not horrible, nor great. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Colonial Spirits in Acton, Massachussets on 23-September-2010, sampled in New Paltz, New York on 25-December-2010, Christmas Day!

12 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazed golden amber, more gold than amber, with a moderate off-white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left a layer of foam with each sip. Pleasant aroma of pine and caramel along with some citrus notes. The flavor begins with a solid dose of malt and caramel followed by some fairly resinous pine. Moderate bitterness at the finish. Medium bodied. Overall, I found this to be a very solid and enjoyable IPA.

12oz bottle, no date from Julio’s on 10/29/2010. Dammit, it looks like there is a bottled on date, and it is 07/21/10--yay, an over three month old IPA. Aroma of some sweaty Cascade hops up front with some woody pine notes following, light caramel at the back end. Actually is holding up well for the age--so far. Flavor shows this, and the hops turn a little stale, but are still fairly herbal, moderate sweet caramel malt, pekoe tea, and light toast. Finishes dry, bitterness peaked at a 4. Alcohol masked well. Light to moderate carbonation with a medium body. Actually not too bad--wonder how a fresher sample would be. . .

I think this is a solid IPA, nicely balanced with a strong hop presence, great summer drinking IPA, worth a try for sure. Not in the top tier but in a close second to many of the great ones.

In short: A citrusy and resinous IPA. Straightforward but nonetheless a solid tasty example of the style.
How: Bottle 12oz. Consumed fresh a few days after purchase
The look: Partly cloudy golden orange body topped by a medium of-white head with good retention
In long: Nose is intensely citrusy. Taste has a bit of caramel but it mostly feels like a big thick condensed citrus fruit affair. Overall the body feels rather nourishing. Some pine-tree notes. The hop profile is also quite resinous. The bitterness is strong sticky. Creamy mouthfeel with a lively carbonation. This is a nice IPA, a bit underrated imho. A well balanced beer. The concept of beer itself is overall well balanced. It is the cause of many problems and the solution to as many.

Bottle… Clear amber ale with a small, creamy, white head. Good retention. The nose offers cookie, brown sugar and black tea. Light to medium-bodied with fizzy carbonation. The flavor suggests black tea with a light squeeze of lemon. Lengthy, bitter, dry finish. Thanks to growler for sharing the bottle!

Bottle. Pours orangey copper with a medium off white head. Aroma and flavor of piney hops, a bit of citrus, some caramel and pale malts. Bit of sweetness in the flavor. Finishes bitter and dry. Medium palate, slightly oily. Nice IPA.

Caramel, iced tea, and light floral hops. A touch fruity as well. Pours copper with decent head retention. The flavor is mostly caramel and iced tea with light fruity citrus hops and floral notes in the finish. Flavor is rather subdued, body is smooth, drinks easily, just not what I enjoy in the flavor department for IPA.
