COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As the British Empire expanded, English brewers added extra hops to keep beer fresh for increasingly long sea voyages. The beer on board the Mayflower shared this trait. Mayflower IPA puts a descendant’s twist on this style, with a powerful hop profile balanced by plenty of malt character. We use the freshest hops from the Pacific Northwest to give this beer its distinct, piney flavor and delightful, fruity aroma.

Bottle. Pours light amber with a white head. Nose is piney and floral hops, noticeable malt background. Taste has more of the same. Could use a bit more hops, a bit less sweetness. Not terribly well balanced either. Decent IPA but nothing special.

This poured a medium orange color with a white head. aroma was of light citrus notes, some pale malts and not much else. Flavor was lightly toasted,a bit sticky, and just enough bitter hops to keep it balanced. Nothing bad, but not a great IPA.

6-pack, poured into a shaker. Great amber color, nice off-white two finger head, hoppy aroma. A great standard IPA, you can’t go wrong with the Mayflower.

hayduke (3558) - Eureka, California, USA - MAY 6, 2010
From a 12oz bottle courtesy of "The Wheelman", this poured a clear amber color with a moderate sized off white head and medium lacing. Nose of floral and citrus hops. Medium body and smooth mouthfeel. The flavor is of light malts with some pine and citrus hops and some bitterness. Dry bitter finish. Kind of a laid back IPA but decent in all regards..

A: Pours a nice vibrant orange hue with a tall off white foamy head. Very very good retention and lots of lace. Pretty pour. S: Lots of nice sweet malts. Caramel and toffee lead the way. Notes of resinous pine, and mild citric notes as well. T: Solid nice balance here. Floral up front with all the sweet candy malts coming out. Floral mostly but there is some pine and a bit of citrus. Tasty and balanced. M: Medium in body, smooth, nice carbonation nice balance between hops and malts.

Pours a deep copper. Off white head. Smells of piney hops, resin and toffee? Bitter (in a good way) with a slightly sweet finish. Sharp hops but more malt forward. Feels a little unbalanced. And the hops taste a bit... grassy. Better IPAs out there.

UPDATED: APR 29, 2010 Pours a three finger cream head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Crystal clear amber color. Nose is piney hops. Flavor is mostly hops but some sweet malts try to balance. Fruity, hoppy finish with a lingering bitter aftertaste. $2.15 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits, Acton, MA.

12oz bottle courtesy of axeman9182 poured into a tulip. Pretty close to a crystal clear amber pour with a big off-white head that recedes to a soapy swirl and solid collar with nice delicate lacing on the sides. The aroma is fairly hoppy with a light spicy herbal hop character with a predominantly grassy aroma with hints of citrus. There is plenty of toasted pale malts that almost shows out as much as the hops in the aroma. The taste is even tamer in the hop department with lemongrass and herbal spiciness giving way to a hefty sweet malt backbone which definitely seems to dominate the hops in the taste. Only in the finish do the hops come out but with a metallic bitterness with little actual hop flavor. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation and sweeter than most IPAs on the palate. This is a decent example of a balanced IPA and I really think it falls much closer to an English IPA than an American IPA as the hop profile is actually secondary to the malts.
