Bottled, 750ml from Hopduvel Warehouse, Ghent. Dark amber to chestnut with white head. Some darker roasted malts lead the way in a relatively simple but pleasing beer. A little woodiness in the malt with just a touch of smokiness, there appears to be some Belgian yeasty spicing, quite possibly the effect of the yeast and a little greenish hop, but in general this is about the maltiness. The strength doesn’t really show through. Very nice.

Straight away you know you’re drinking a Belgium ale of some description. I would have said this was a Belguim strong ale over a scotish. Malty, oak flavours. Dark red, even black in colour. Caramal, toffy not over the top. Interesting beer.

Slightly sweet and spicey. Deep brown (cant see throught it at all). Solid lacey tan head. Dry and a bit roasty a subtle cotton candy sweetness on the back of the tongue.

2004 Vintage. Served from bottle into a tulip. Pours a dark brown amber with a one finger off white head. It maintains decent lacing throughout. The aroma was comprised of bananas, alcohol, malt, and brown sugar. The flavor was of fruit, massive malt, and slight alcohol. It was medium on the palate with high carbonation. Overall, this beer was excellent. Couldn’t find a single thing wrong with it. It definitely aged very well if you can get ahold of an aged version you owe it to your taste buds to try it.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Leighton (3590) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUL 7, 2010
Tap at Rattle n Hum. Pours a semi-clear brown with a large, off-white head. Good fruits in the nose, along with lightly roasted malts, booze and caramel. Sweet flavor, with great toffee, caramel, ripe fruit and scotch. Medium bodied with average carbonation. More sweetness in the finish, along with faint bitter notes. Good stuff.

Make no bones about it, this beer is special, just not great (and not worth $10 a bottle). That being said, the beer is a good example of a Belgian Brown or Scotch Ale - though the malty flavors of traditional Scotch Ales doesn’t really shine here. A cocoa brown colored body gives way to a beautiful, frothy tan head that allows a bouquet of brown sugar, butterscotch, and yeast to hit the nose. From there, the medium bodied brew provides a charming blend of brown sugar, light malts, English hops and Belgian yeast. The only downfall to me was the rather light to medium body the brew provided, surprising for a Belgian. The carbonated, spritzy effervescence of a Belgian doesn’t push through in this beer...its only pitfall. Then again, maybe I got a bad bottle.
