4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 maltdog (587) - Pueblo, Colorado, USA - SEP 23, 2008
750ml. Attractive mahogany color, hazy with floaties, and sporting a steady one-finger mousse. A spicy, grapey nose is loaded with exotic tropical fruits against a nutty malt background. The sweetish toffee flavor hints at vanilla, Frangelico, toasted almonds, anise and gingerbread spice. Somewhat reminiscent of tawny port. There is a brief fruit candy (PEZ?) character in the finish, as well as noticeable ethanol warming. Restrained pinpoint carbonation lifts an otherwise thick, tactile mouthfeel. Orchard fruit, wood, and charming “farmhouse” mustiness in the aftertaste. A fantastic ale that just begs for a ploughman’s lunch… or a perfect accompaniment to a crisp autumn afternoon.

Draft. Slighly hazy red/brown pour with a bubbly off-white head. Didn’t get a huge head from my pour. Malty goodness on the nose, but with Belgian sugar (candied fruits) as well. Toffee and caramel, and some nice yeast. Similar to a dubbel but yeastier. A very, very easy-drinking Belgian.

A rich and robust Belgian, reminiscent of a brown ale / barleywine combo. Not overwhelming, but decent.

A little hazy brown colored beer, with a huge beige head. The aroma of caramel, chocolade malt and fruits. The taste of chocolade, toffee, dark fruits, like raisins some sweets. The aftertaste is smooth bitter and warm. A very nice beer, in the vain of Chouffe.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Meatmallet (126) - Salem, Illinois, USA - SEP 9, 2008
Pours brown with a head that quickly fades.Smells like yeast, dark fruits, some caramelized malt and a little hops. Not overly powerful.A little sour at first with the dark fruit flavor. There is light carbonation present with each sip. Very smooth in the mouth. Not bad but not my favorite of the style.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 nearbeer (2572) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - SEP 8, 2008
UPDATED: SEP 14, 2008 750 ml that says 8.0% abv. Nearly opaque chestnut, with a lasting one-finger cap of sugary foam. Nice mix of sugary frosting and soapy lacing on the glass. Spicy apple and toffee aroma later gives way to some smoky cabbage. Flavors of caramel, apple, raisin, with finishing touches of earthy smoke, alcohol and cocoa for a delicate balance. Almost-medium body is slightly watery but finishes nicely dry with some alcohol warmth.
