UPDATED: SEP 20, 2014 Dark brown color, medium to big off-white head. Big lacing. Caramel, fruit and alcohol nose. Aroma is brown sugar, caramel, dark malts and dark fruits. Body is nice, creamy and thick, soft carbonation. Sweet taste. What I didn?t like about this one is alcohol aroma. Like they didn?t even try to hide it. Nevertheless, Chouffe apparently can?t disappoint. (Pivkan 0,33l bottle

Bel colore bruno intenso. Profumo non particolarmente inteso. Corpo pieno, intenso, si sente il caramello e l’alcol sul finale. Tipicamente belga.

Bottle at home from backlog notes 07/08. Pours a clear brown color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, cookies, dried fruit, figs, light berry notes, mild herbal bitterness. Decent enough to consider again.

DATE REVIEWED: June 6, 2014... GLASSWARE: Chimay chalice... OCCASION: a week of returning to workouts--protein is welcome!... APPEARANCE: dark purple body; soft, wispy off-white head that thins out to an uneven, varied density; nice, intricate lacing... AROMA: immediate prune and apple; hops are aromatic and yeast adds some funk to an otherwise sweet malt... PALATE: thick, creamy, a bit chewy, and warming; easy-drinking and dry at the finish; a fleet, discrete presence--good, solid brown ale base... TASTE: grape and prune are the dominant flavors; smoky malt surprises, as does the lack of alcohol; rather flat at the finish... OVERALLL: a classy, slightly subdued version of tits usual and Christmas varieties; situation is key--introduced this at Thanksgiving a decade ago, but it didn’t pair with the main courses well; as a nightcap, it can open with its complexity or close with its strength....

33ml Bottle. Dark red-brown ale with a decent scummy tan head. Nose of prunes, red wine, caramel, berries, whisky. Taste is woah... alcohol, then it chills out to give some breads, whisky, vanilla, breads, caramel, toast, banana, more banana. Incredibly warming with a nice steady carbonation. Just enough to make you burp without making you gassy. Finish is long and sensuous. Sip it like a red wine. Ooh, just pulled out some licorice. A surprise around every corner - every sip. A delight.

Aroma: light bread, medium caramel malts, molasses. Appearance: dark clear brown/black, medium beige frothy head. Taste: light sweet. Palate: sweets expand, caramel, brown sugars, light bitters coming up, but remain in the background, light carbonation, average-long finish. Overall: nice Belgian Strong Ale, not too sweet in aroma and palate. Bottle from Beers of Belgium, Ypres.

Bottle 330ml. Pours dark brown, hazy, with off-white medium head. Aroma is fruity and whinous, with noticeable of alcohol, yeast and malt. Mouth feel is light creamy to watery with very gentle carbonation and just a tiny bit of tang. Taste is slightly bitter-sweet at first, with strong notes of citrusy sourness from the hops as well as some week bitterness, wineous notes. Flavors of liquorice and fruit. Then gets sweeter, with notes of alcohol, cloves and banana, hints of caramel and grapefruit, with mellow bitterness and sourness in the background. Ends sweetish, slightly sticky. Flavor profile is wonderful, with many complex flavors and is mostly sweet, with a very gentle bitterness to round it. Sourness and alcohol are very present. Could have used more carbonation/bitterness to counter the sweetness. Great sipping beer. Slightly heavy. Better for a cold day.
