Brown color with big off white head. Aroma of caramel, smoke, raisins, toasted, yeast. Taste is light sweet with dark fruits flavor. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Really nice.

Rouge à la lumière, cette "Achouffe écossaise" pourtant bien belge a des notes de sucre cuit et de boisé. En bouche, on y goûte du sucre d’orge, surtout en finale, après des fruits rouges et des arômes très maltés et ronds. Version belge de la scotch ale (dont elle est originaire de toute façon), cette brune a de belles qualités, assez pour s’élever bien au-dessus de la masse (alcool bien contenu, saveurs charmantes, bel équilibre en général), mais elle n’a pas la personnalité de sa soeur blonde, ni l’audace de sa cousine triple IPA.

On draft at Sharp Edge Brasserie. Poured hazy ruby with fizzy off white head. Candi sugar, plums, raisins present. Yeasty. Just a tad thin.

Bottle (tried both but prefer bottle version rather than the draft). Pours hazy deep reddish-brown color, tall slowly fading head, nice sticky lacing. Dark fruits and malt aroma. Complex mixture of flavors with fruity sweetness, malts, mild hop bitterness and alcohol notes, nicely balanced. Smooth and creamy. Great beer.

Poured from draft into a Brasserie La Chouffe stemmed glass at Mead Hall. Medium dark pour with a huge fluffy white head. Sweet malty aroma. Notes of caramel and dark fruits and belgian yeast.

(bottle, 75cl) Hazy, ruby colour with a big and off-white foamy head. Slightly sugary dark malty aroma with notes of caramel, an earthy, leafy touch, yeasty spice and subtle notes of candied dates. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, quite full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Robust dark malty base with notes of caramel, leather and liquorice, accompanied by a spicy yeasty touch; sweet bitter and almost chewy dark malty finish with moderately spicy notes. Finally I´d prefer the blond Chouffe. 07.V.13

Bottle, 33cl, Supermarket (AHXL) . Aroma: Malt, caramel, alcohol. Appearance: Dark chestnut brown. Small head with a teeny bit of lacing left. Taste: Caramel, malts, wood, nuts, alcohol. Palate: Fairly light body, short-lived almond aftertaste. Turns quite dry afterwards.

Nice brown pour with a decent light tan head that sticks around and plasters the sides. Aroma’s a little yeasty, some roasty and caramel malt notes but fairly vague. Flavor is nice. Earthy, toasty, some dried fruit and roast malt with sweetness. Decent stuff, not a hint of the 8%.

Bouteille 33cl. Cuivrée, col moyen beige. Arôme présente un bouquet fruité très léger, noir avec un côté raisin sec. Malt caramel, grains, sucre candi et léger biscuité. Palais garde ce profil bien belge, malt caramel voire grillé restant dans l’optique des scotchs européennes avec cette pointe rappelant une brune au caractère plus malté. Levure est aussi présente avec un ajout amer subtile venant des houblons en fin de bouche. Sucre candi et note biscuitée.

Head: beige, medium, frothy, avg.retention. dark red-brown, Aroma: dried fruit, some caramel, yeast or herbal hops - not sure (?). Taste: a bit of caramel, spice, alcohol. Prefer the plain La Chouffe.
