Brown hue with reddish tint and a huge off-white head. Wet paper sack, spices, fleshy fruits, caramel, bittersweet chocolate, cherry wood, and earthy yeast aroma. Moderate sour/acidic initial taste which warms up with a mild alcohol presence. Sweet malts and aromatic hops lead to a dry and woody finish. Medium-bodied with a fizzy mouthfeel. Well made Belgian brown ale with all the characteristics found in the best of genre (scottish ale my arse). Maybe I'm biased since I lived in the Ardennes region for a year, but I love this beer! Highly Recommended.

UPDATED: JUL 29, 2010 Bottle. Cherry, orange, plum and grass aroma. Cloudy orange brown color with small head. Lightly sweet plum/orange malt and lightly bitter grass/celery flavor. Smooth with a nice body - very easy drinking with alcohol content well hidden. First time I tried this I must have gotten an old bottle - it had a very strong astringent celery flavor that really turned me off.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2005 Bottle (330ml). Poured a beautiful cloudy dark ruby-brown with a large foamy/rocky light brown head and noticeable sludge of tiny black particles. Aroma quite surprising - more mild hop bitterness than I expected, competing with the usual dark roast malt, bread yeastiness, some toffee and root beeriness - quite sweet on warming. Taste follows the aroma, darkly sweet, not much hoppiness, still nicely spicy, with fruit and vanilla entering the blend. Very enjoyable, not alcohol-strong at all, although as it warms the alcohol asserts itself some. A little astringent mouthfeel. I’d like to try the 750ml bottle, or better yet, have it on tap if I ever visit Bruges again.

750 mL bottle. Reddish brown pour with very small suspended particles. Large fizzy off-white head fades to a film on top of the beer. Fruity Belgian yeast aroma with earthy toffee notes. Taste is dryer than expected. Toffee, nutty, earthy and that same fruity yeast.

(75 cl bottle at Café 3 Små Rum, Göteborg) Shared with a friend. Labeled 8% ABV. BB 07/06/2010. Clear reddish brown color, big lasting tan head. Sweet and spicy scent, also alcohol. Sweet, fruity and acidic taste. Spritzy mouthfeel, low bitterness. Warming alcohol.

Ruby pour heaped with a subsiding rocky beige head. Nose sweet and distinctly woody with rooty/earthy herbal notes like Jagermeister, liquorice, a hint of berry fruit, marzipan..ALCOHOL. Flavour initially caramelised sweetness, medicinal spice, a touch of plummy nectarine fruit, then almond, ALCOHOL bitterness and burn. If this was in a can and brewed by Grolsch or Tennent’s nobody would give it anything. 750ml is way too much. Corked it, stuck it in the fridge for the missus, and had a Westvleteren to take the taste away.

Pours a very dark purple with lots of carbonation and a medium sized light tan head. Aroma of banana, peaches and clove. The taste is surprisingly hoppy with orange peel and a bitterness at the end that reminded me of drinking a Coke. Lots of lacing. Belgium continues to amaze me with their variety.

Bottle shared by hallinghansen. Brown colour with a superb creamy light beige head. Fruity aroma with dark sugar and lots of malt. Creamy body. Great taste of spices, dark candy sugar and yeast.
