UPDATED: AUG 3, 2009 (Bottled, 0.33l) Hazy dark red with a large, lacy head. Very mild, caramely aroma. Flavor of caramely malt and dark toffee, with some hop bitterness and a touch of ash. Medium body, pretty high but soft carbonation. Not as nice in a small bottle, but still ok. (Bottled, 0.75l, was 6-3-8-4-17=3.8) Muddy, dark brown color. Light, malty and fruity aroma. Flavor is exactly like banana-chocolate ice-cream. Alcohol tastes through a bit, and there’s quite a lot of carbonization. This is a beer that tingles in your tongue.

0.75L Bottle. Earthy hops strike the nose initially, dusty malts and wood follow. Cloudy red, huge rocky tan head, leaving plenty of lace. Medium body, berries, cork (not from the bottle though - only had a cap). Relatively light body, sparkly mouthfeel. Honey and oak retronasal.

Lots of aroma - orange, plum, spice, sweet malt, chocolate. Big tan head that dissipates slowly. Hazy burgundy burnt copper colour.Chocolatey flavour with some dark fruitiness and a little bit of spice. Alcohol definite in the finish. Flavour not quite as deep as I was expecting from that heady nose but all in all very enjoyable. Medium-light body is entirely appropriate for style but perhaps a tad over carbonated. I'm going to put a couple of these down and try them again in a year or two. Bottle.

The bottle says ’Brown Ale’, but it DOES have significant Scotch ale characteristics as well; very sweet and much stronger than a typical Brown. Alcohol odor and flavor is a bit too strong, but overall it’s very drinkable and memorably flavorful. Awesome head and color.

750 mL bottle. Golden brown with big fluffy off-white head. Malty aroma with a hint of yeast. Lively palate. Caramel taste with a toasty, yeasty finish.

750. Pours deep opaque ebony with deep amber highlights. Towering thick sudsy moussy tan head--this is a gorgeous beer, a centerfold without a doubt. Funky, sweatsocky, sour cherry-ish on the nose. Big forward malt sweetness/brown-sugary notes all over the palate. Medium attack with subdued carb and nearly-watery body. Mid-palate’s not as subtle or as complex as ya might ordinarily hope for from Achouffe. I’d drink the hell out of this beer if I were standing in a bar that served it and not too many other things--it’d make for an amazingly good session. And an amazingly comatose cab ride afterward. But even though this is local and reasonably priced, I’m not sure I need to seek it out again in a bottle. Solid and then some, but unspectacular.

Bottle. Pours a hazy ruby-brown with a large light-brown head. Fairly mild aroma of malt, pepper, alcohol, sugar and dark fruit. Flavour follows the aroma. Looks carbonated but doesn’t taste it -- it tasted flat and watery. Dissapointing, I much preferred La Chouffe -- maybe a bad bottle?

Bottled 750ml. -Dark brown coloured, medium sized off-white head, malty and prunes nose. Very malty, caramel and some spices with notes of dried fruits, burnt sugar and alcohol. A way too sweet beer.
