3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 corby112 (1862) - philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 12, 2011
Draft at the Pour House in Westmont, NJ.
Pours a dark chocolate brown color with a 1.5 finger beige head that slowly fades into a lastig ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.
Subtle roasted malt aroma with some zesty spice and dark fruit notes. Slightly peppery with hints of chocolate, toast, caramel and nut.
Medium bodied with a nice balance of zesty spice, sweet malt and dark fruit. Lots of peppery spice up front followed by sweet malt flavors, notably caramel and toffee before finishing with a prominent dark fruit presence. Hints of plum, raisin, currant and other dark berries. Subtle alcohol sweetness but not much heat. Could use a stronger malt character to balance out swet fruits but still pretty good.

750 ml bottle purchased from BevMo. Pours walnut color with a creamy beige head that lasts well. Interesting this combination of Scotch and Belgian styles. Aroma is quite sweet, lots of dark fruits, hints of maple, molasses and spicy yeastiness. Flavor is also sweet, dark fruity malts, molasses, tea, lavendar and floral notes. Medium to full body, smooth on the tongue with gentle carbonation. Quite nice.

Pours a clear dark ruby red color with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malt and wood. Flavor of licorice and mint, yet dry and bittersweet and with a hint of alcohol. not much carbonation and a long dry finish. Somehow a bit off balance, or just not my thing.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sham (1846) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAY 13, 2004
Dark mahogany pour, off white head and sheet lacing. Tangy malts, spices and floral hops in the aroma. Woody roasdted malt flavors, more spices, hops, and some wood. Sticky palate full of spice, well defined body, and a finish of alcohol and spice.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 tjthresh (1840) - Greenfield, Indiana, USA - JUL 18, 2006
Poured into a Duvel glass. Poured a darker cherry red with a frothy dirty white head. Some lace left behind. Kind of an earthy dried leaf and mushroom aroma. The aroma gets a touch sweeter is it warms. Wish there was some more malty character, and maybe a touch of smoke. The flavor isn’t anything special either. Some earth dirty notes. A touch of chocolate. Pickly bitter finish. Lots of distracting carbonation.

Pretty nice, though mild for the style I thought. The malt isn’t as peaty as I would have expected.

Serving: 750 ml bottle from Paeonian Grocery.
It pours a deep mahogany color with a small, resilient, off-white head. The nose is malty with a bit of earth, spice, and caramel. The flavor has notes of toasted malt, dark caramel, a bit of dust, peat, and earth. Slightly sweet but dry. Medium body with high, aggressive carbonation and a short finish. A nice spicy scotch ale that does a good job blending the best of the Belgian and Scotch worlds.
