3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 jerc (5444) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 18, 2004
UPDATED: JUL 19, 2004 Dark ruby brown body with a healthy off white head. Aroma is either muted or my nose is malfunctioning. Bit of sweet malt. Nice mouthfeel, lots of sweet maltiness and a touch of yeast in the flavour. Just a touch of alcohol in the finish. Very nice beer but not mindblowing.

What a nice, warming brew. Although I’m a confirmed hophead, I enjoy a good Scotch ale, and this is an interesting Belgian twist on the style. It’s got a clear, deep nutty brown body with a tall, rocky beige head. The aroma is a rich, slightly smokey, somewhat nutty malt, a modestly caramel sweet malt. The body is thick and syrupy, delivering a sweet, smokey malt flavor that slides down way too easily. The finish is sweet and warm, although the sturdy abv doesn’t truly makes its presence known until it’s well into your system. Very, very nice.

Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel, nuts), lightly hoppy (flowers), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of plum, brown sugar, coriander. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Pretty decent, if not particularly exciting.

Slightly cloudy chestnut color with a bigger bubbled, smallish beige head. Aroma reminds me of a few of the T'ij brews, strong overripe fruit drenched in caramel. For some reason I envision fruit flies. Smooth flavors start with a touch of peat, move on to fruits of pineapple, dates and plums. Finishes with a balance malt and hops curious, corpulent, conglomeration. Finish is really rather fleet, with just a linger of licorice. A complex and satisfying libation.
