Outstandingly complex ale. Dark cloudy brown appearance with rather large creamy tan head. Strong carbonation. Aroma is rich and fruity: fig, raisin, licorice, chocolate. Flavor is strong and alcoholic with strong notes of raisin and licorice, chocolate, caramel and fruitiness less strong. A bit tart and funky in a Belgiany way, but fruity and sweet like a Scottish ale. At first the high carb bothered me, but after drinking a whole big bottle, I realized that without it, this beer would be a morass of strong flavors cloying on the tongue. The bubbles keep it light (well, more or less, its a heavy beer) and lively, and keep the flavors moving.

i really enjoyed this, and found it really interesting, big fat bubbly head, dark brown in colour, malty, sweet, spicy, warming, tasty, a bit of candy floss in there aswell, but its nice and dry in the end, very pleasant.

UPDATED: JAN 20, 2007 750 ml: Speckeled mahogany. Pasty off-white head. Extremely earthy malts and touches of perfume, wood, juicy hops, and musty yeast notes in the aroma. Nutty malts with a touch of Crystal richness and soil. Complex, dry finish of chew earthy malt goodness atop a gentle noble hop kiss. Cellaring is a must for this to reach its full beauty.

This is one that you’ve had and always assumed rated, so it was a surprise to have not found it on my list. Toffee nose, slightly woody, but mostly yeast - very sweet aromas. Mahogany color, foamy beige head. Caramelly malt base, vanilla, maple syrup, dainty dry end. Some cinnamon spiciness. Fully body, smooth and real classy. Fabulous.

Dark brown color. Chocolatey aroma and chocolate+caramel flavor, drier than expected. Good without thrills.

Dark red-amber color; persistent head. Very nice malt nose, and malt body, with some liquorice. Dryer than we may guess.

bottle-pours a ruby red hue with a big off-white head-big and sudsy. musty, sweet, estery aroma that doesnt smell anything like the scotch ales of england/scotland. this is more a dubbel-good spicy notes, estery, fruity. Lots of malt, but not in the scotch ale style. I really like ths one, especially of a style i dont care for.

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2003 Pours a dark brown color with a big tan head. The beer leaves very little lacing on the glass. Sweet aroma of malts attacks the nose. High carbonation, medium bodied, and very sweet. It has nice full and rich malty flavors, but the carbonation is a little high. Still good though.

Aroma of dough, dark fruit, a little banana. Flavor is of dark fruit caramel and a slight cola. The carbonation keeps the flavor lively. Very nice beer.
