Dark brown, somewhat ruby red when held up to light with a thick white head. Aroma of pear, spices, hops and caramel. Taste has notes of brown sugar, yeast, pear, raisins, roasty malts, nuts, chocolate and spiciness. Pretty sweet. Alcohol content very well hidden. Medium body with lively carbonation. Not much lacking but good head retention. Good stuff.

[bottle] Brown amber color, with a relentless, fluffy head. Aroma is alcohol, and sweet sugar. Flavors are yeast, nutty malts and a slight bitterness. A unique take on the Scotch style- I like it a lot.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2005 Bottle (330ml). Poured a beautiful cloudy dark ruby-brown with a large foamy/rocky light brown head and noticeable sludge of tiny black particles. Aroma quite surprising - more mild hop bitterness than I expected, competing with the usual dark roast malt, bread yeastiness, some toffee and root beeriness - quite sweet on warming. Taste follows the aroma, darkly sweet, not much hoppiness, still nicely spicy, with fruit and vanilla entering the blend. Very enjoyable, not alcohol-strong at all, although as it warms the alcohol asserts itself some. A little astringent mouthfeel. I’d like to try the 750ml bottle, or better yet, have it on tap if I ever visit Bruges again.

75 cl Bottle. Amber colour with a nice fizzy beige head. Spicy aroma with some notes of sweetness and fruity. Nice spicy malt flavour with a touch of bitterness at the end.

Pours with beautiful, plentiful head, perfect density, sticks around, nice contrast to murky brown body. Aroma is great with lots of brown sugar and some black pepper. Feels pretty thin and watery, but a bit smooth in mouth, goes down quickly! Tastes of plum, malt, and yeast with a bit of brandy too. Carbonation is good, a little more than most beers, but works well. Spice is nice and expected, but just a shade off from what would really complement the rest of the flavors. Overall, a great, suprisingly easy brew to guzzle down. Just not leaving me with too much reason to go out and buy another.

On draught at the New Oxford, Salford 16/03/2007 Malt aroma. Dark coloured smooth on the palate and fruity with some alcohol present. Some dryness in a warming lasting malt finish.

Pours a cloudy brown. Sugary sweet caramel aroma. Caramel, dark fruit, bread dough followed by some slightly astingent and herbal bitterness. Quite sweet but well balanced. Highly drinkable for such a full bodied beer. Becomes more bold as it warms. Overall, excellent ale.

Hazy Amber with fine white head. Malty aroma and taste - nuts & dark fruits dominates. Sweetness. A bit "earthy". Little alcohol feel. Pleasant spicy hoppy finish. Good Belgium!
